Pupule ballot: Maryknoll rules, St. Francis surging

By Paul Honda on December 4, 2017

The girls basketball regular season begins this week in the ILH and OIA. ALREADY! The days of January starts are long gone. Girls basketball is ahead of the boys by two weeks, as it has been in recent seasons, to alleviate strenuous gym-time challenges at just about every high school. Interesting that there are a number of coaches, current and retired, who still bemoan the conflicts caused by having boys and girls season in the winter instead of split up […]

Obrey powers Kamehameha in close win over HBA

By Paul Honda on December 2, 2017

Frankly, the Kamehameha Warriors weren’t interested in playing Sacred Hearts twice in a five-day period. Instead of playing the host Lancers in the final of the Orthopedic Associates Sacred Hearts Invitational, Kamehameha coach Joseph Cho opted to switch spots with Waiakea after beating the Big Islanders on Friday in the semifinals. Kamehameha played Hawaii Baptist in what amounted to a third-place matchup. The Warriors overcame the resilient Eagles in a 49-41 win on Saturday afternoon at Dorothy Macy Nobriga Gymnasium. […]

Imai, Liu spark Waiakea over Sacred Hearts for title

By Paul Honda on December 2, 2017

The Waiakea Warriors didn’t really consider this a championship game, but there they were. After losing to Kamehameha in Friday’s semifinal round of the Orthopedic Associates Sacred Hearts Invitational, Waiakea was prepared to play in Saturday’s third-place game, but there was a hitch. Kamehameha coach Joseph Cho wanted to avoid facing Sacred Hearts Academy, which ousted Hawaii Baptist in the other semifinal. Sacred Hearts (7-4 nonconference), a fellow member of ILH Division I girls basketball, plays Kamehameha on Thursday in […]

By Paul Honda on December 2, 2017

It’s almost noon on Saturday, which means only one thing: girls basketball statewide is in an unusual twist at this moment. On Friday, Lahainaluna got a clutch 3 from Rachael Balagso to tie the game en route to a stunning 44-42 double-overtime victory over host and defending state champion Konawaena. This is believed to be the first home loss for Konawaena under coach Bobbie Awa in nearly […]

Wily thinking long term for young Kahuku

By Paul Honda on November 26, 2017

There was a time, not so long ago, when LaToya Wily and Chico Furtado were not coaching counterparts. In fact, Wily was one of the top hoopsters in the state, and she departed from Kahuku to play at Furtado’s girls basketball juggernaut at Kalaheo for a season. Furtado, now coach at Maryknoll, remembers it clearly. “That was some crazy times. She played for me one summer with Hawaii Select. Then she came over after her freshman year. Leaving a community […]
