Friday Night Lights: Eli Kapu’s magazine is out!

By Jerry Campany on September 3, 2010

Arrived in Ewa early, beating any potential traffic hassles in town and on infamous Fort Weaver Road. Got the notepad, stat book, even the video camera juiced up and ready for some action tonight between No. 7 Leilehua and the sturdy Sabers of Campbell. Lot of goodies available at the gate and in the facility at Campbell, from seat cushions (worth the 10 bucks on these hard, metal bleachers) to homemade fried noodles (only $2 — photos coming later) to […]

Video: Ceejay Santos 50-yard FG

By Jerry Campany on September 1, 2010

Ceejay Santos had accuracy and distance on this Aug. 14 night at Kailua in a 19-10 win by Baldwin. The senior had an an extra 8-10 yards beyond the crossbar, though there was a significant back wind coming down from the hills that night. With a quarter-inch tee, he showed the kind of ability that makes him one of the best placekickers in the state. Paul Honda, Star-Advertiser

Preview: ILH football (Prep World length)

By Jerry Campany on September 1, 2010

(Note: Here’s the original version of the ILH football preview that was shortened in print today.) In the state’s only exclusively private-school sports league, it’s not about lacking confidence. If you’re Saint Louis, the most recent Interscholastic League of Honolulu title seems so long ago. If you’re Punahou, it’s been almost two years since the state crown. Even Kamehameha, the defending state champ, is starting to forget last season’s glory after a loss to Farrington on Friday. The competition is […]

Punahou, Farrington continue to ground, pound

By Jerry Campany on August 30, 2010

. While powerhouses Kahuku and Saint Louis have found success through the aerial game, Punahou and Farrington — both still unbeaten — have relied heavily on the cornerstones of defense and the ground attack. Farrington, which zoomed four notches up to No. 2 in The Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 (to be released in print Tuesday), ran 45 times for 223 yards behind its offensive line, affectionately called the “Bamboolas” by coach Randall Okimoto. Quarterback Jared Hakuole threw just seven passes […]

Friday Night Lights: Corrections, Mumblings

By Jerry Campany on August 27, 2010

We’re 16 minutes from kickoff (supposedly) here at Kahuku where the Red Raiders and Saint Louis Crusaders are warming up. The crowd’s warming up, too. Saint Louis fans in their navy-blue Crusader tees have packed the bleachers, shoulder to shoulder and okole to okole. It is almost … electric. I’ll try to avoid the usual cliches before my buddy Dave Reardon busts me for such cardinal sins like … “At the end of the day …” I hate that one, […]

Lights on at Kahuku

By Jerry Campany on August 27, 2010

After power outages caused the postponements of two football games last year and this fall, Kahuku has the problem under control. “The lights were fixed about an hour after they went out (last week),” Kahuku athletic director Joe Whitford said of a home game against Kailua. “It was a blown fuse on a pole.” A large crowd is expected when No. 2 Saint Louis visits No. 1 Kahuku  tonight. JV kickoff is set for 5 p.m. The game will be […]

OIA Red West preview

By Jerry Campany on August 20, 2010

“The road goes through them. They’re definitely loaded now,” the Leilehua coach said. “Two years ago, we won the JV title, but our only loss was to Mililani, and they didn’t have Trent (McKinney) then.”
