Final: Saint Louis 38, Pac-Five 7

By Jerry Campany on September 9, 2011

10:37 p.m. Lights are out here at Aloha Stadium. Good effort by both teams. Pac-Five is probably one of the top Division II teams in the state this year. Saint Louis? They were crisp and sharp most of the night. Second half running clock kept this game short. ILH D-II battle between ‘Iolani and Pac-Five will be spirited, to say the least. D-II is up for grabs. Some classic gridiron action coming soon. 9:08 p.m. The Crusaders left no doubt […]

Final: Punahou 38, ‘Iolani 18

By Jerry Campany on September 9, 2011

Update 9:06 p.m. The Buffanblu withstood a second-half aerial attack by the Raiders to win their regular-season opener. Punahou’s defense had five takeaways to stifle the Raiders, who kept the pressure on with Reece Foy, who passed for 391 yards and three touchdowns. 4:40 p.m. Punahou has a 24-6 lead at ‘Iolani after one half thanks to three touchdown passes by Larry Tuileta. The sophomore has touchdown passes to K.J. Sekona, Malik Johnson and Kyle Dyas. Punahou’s defense has dominated […]

Farrington-Kailua preview (extended)

By Paul Honda on September 9, 2011

(Here’s an extended version of this morning’s preview of the Farrington-Kailua game. I wrote a little too long for the print version, but here’s the story with extras.) For the team in maroon, it’s all about poundage at the line of scrimmage. Farrington is off to a scintillating start and Tyler Taumua is having one of the best junior seasons of any running back in recent memory. For the team in blue, things just might be turning around. When the […]

Hound and Pound (extended version, photos)

By Paul Honda on September 6, 2011

(Here’s the original version of a feature on Pac-Five’s football team — the defense. This piece was too long for the print edition.) For a lot of Division II football programs, things happen in cycles. Just a couple of years ago, Pac-Five knew this well. P.J. Minaya was an elusive playmaker at quarterback, and a talented group of receivers and running backs allowed the Wolfpack to score a lot of points. This fall, the pendulum of strength has swung over […]

Heart of a champion

By Paul Honda on August 30, 2011

He was, figuratively and literally, a Fast Eddie. On the gridiron, Eddie Klaneski was a classic Damien man, an overachiever who wasn’t a prototypical height or weight on the football field. Coaches just loved him because he was fast, physical and smart, each in large doses. When sportswriters, alumni and fans think about Damien football, the list of college football players — Klaneski made his mark at UH — keeps growing. All this despite a program at Damien that often […]

Pupule’s football Top 10 ballot

By Paul Honda on August 26, 2011

Here’s how I voted in this week’s Star-Advertiser Football Top 10: 1. Kahuku, 2. Saint Louis, 3. Punahou, 4. Farrington, 5. Leilehua, 6. Campbell, 7. Aiea, 8. Radford, 9. Pac-Five, 10. Kamehameha. On the cusp: Baldwin, ‘Iolani, Mililani, Waianae, Kaimuki, Kapolei, Kamehameha-Hawaii. Kailua was close in the first couple of weeks, but the losses to Kealakehe and Punahou set the Surfriders back. Emphasizing safety (extended version)

By Paul Honda on August 26, 2011

(Here’s an extended version of the concussion story that ran in Tuesday’s Star-Advertiser. The print version had limited space.) There were a few chairs nearby, but Jeremiah Andrade couldn’t sit. For the first time in his young football life, the shifty Leilehua receiver was sidelined. He still had his road white jersey on, but from the pressbox at Kapolei High School’s field, all he could do was watch with some of the Mules’ coaching staff. “I was on my toes […]

Joy for Mohika family, Damien ohana

By Paul Honda on August 21, 2011

Everywhere I went in the past 48 hours, friends and acquaintances asked me one thing and one thing only: How is Alan Mohika doing? Before the weekend, few people statewide knew about the Damien quarterback/defensive back. I’d met him just once or twice, on photo days at Damien. But on Friday, as he passed for Damien’s first touchdown of the season, he suffered a severe concussion. As Monarchs coach Eddie Klaneski said, Alan was unconscious, was not breathing and had […]
