Konawaena-Lahainaluna preview: extended version

By Jerry Campany on November 12, 2011

(Here’s the long version of this preview. I wrote more than we had room for in the print edition. Way more.) He’s been described by old-time watchers at Julian Yates Field as anything from a younger version of Ray Lewis to a current version of the late Jesse Mahelona. That’s how good 6-foot-2, 260-pound linebacker/defensive tackle Mike Andrade is, if you believe the descriptions. If you don’t, well then, it’s all just hype. Andrade wears No. 45 for the Konawaena […]

By Jerry Campany on November 11, 2011

First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships Leilehua at Kealakehe KEALAKEHE, 9:36 p.m. Reece Acohido’s interception in the red zone ends Kealakehe’s final drive with 29 seconds left. Leilehua escapes with a 35-24 win. Update 9:20 p.m. — Tim Momiyama’s 33-yard field goal has increased Leilehua’s lead to 32-24 with 6:14 to go. This is a good one. Update 8:53 p.m. — John Kamoku leaped over from the 1-yard line to bring Kealakehe within 22-17 with 4:37 to go in the third. […]

OIA Red final: Farrington-Kahuku update (12:35 pm)

By Jerry Campany on November 4, 2011

. . . 12:35 a.m. Penalties: Farrington 12 for 132 yards, Kahuku 13 for 160 yards. Billy Hull has the penalty yardage for the OIA White final, which was also a festival of yellow flags. I never saw so many illegal blocks (Pearl City) and illegal procedures (Waipahu) in my . . . well, maybe in a few years, not the entire 21-plus years I’ve been covering preps. 11:18 […]

Preview: Waipahu-Pearl City, OIA White final

By Paul Honda on November 4, 2011

Waipahu (7-3, 6-2) vs. Pearl City (9-1, 9-0) On paper: Two high-octane, run-and-shoot offenses could combine for 21 points in a matter of minutes, right? When these two teams met a month ago, Pearl City escaped with a 13-8 win. The Chargers’ prolific attack — 335 yards per game — managed to gain just 203 yards against Waipahu’s defensive wall. The good news that night at Bino Neves Stadium was a Chargers’ defense that picked off Waipahu slinger Drake Yoshioka twice and […]

Preview: Campbell-Leilehua, third place

By Paul Honda on November 4, 2011

. . .. . ..                           . Campbell (8-2, 6-2) at Leilehua (8-1-1, 7-1) On paper: Their previous meeting resulted in a 32-13 win for the Mules, limiting Campbell to 88 passing yards. The rematch will again be at Hugh Yoshida Stadium. Unlike years past, when November brought torrential rain and lakes of mud to the field, the synthetic turf will permit both teams to use their four-wide offenses […]

Preview: Farrington-Kahuku, OIA final

By Paul Honda on November 4, 2011

Farrington (10-0, 8-0 OIA) vs. Kahuku (9-1, 7-1) On paper: Their last meeting, a 14-13 win by Farrington before a full house, had as much to do with Farrington’s defensive prowess as Kahuku’s kicking game. Bad long snaps led to a botched field-goal opportunity in the first half, and a blown PAT in the second. Despite the loss, that game marked the comeback of Aofaga Wily, who rushed for 136 yards on 24 carries after enduring injury issues through the first […]

Kamehameha-Punahou: Extra (updated Friday)

By Paul Honda on November 4, 2011

(This is the rest of the story I wrote last night for today’s game report. Space limitations and I usually overwrite, but thankfully, there’s our blog here.) Another Kamehameha three-and-out led to a 37-yard field goal by Kaimi Fairbairn. The drive was set up by Steven Lakalaka’s 51-yard jaunt out of a Wildcat formation, and Punahou led 17-7 with 2:50 to go in the half. Kamehameha’s offense finally regained some mojo in the final 3 minutes before the break. Thirty […]
