Football? In July?

By Paul Honda on July 30, 2012

Yup, if it seems odd that so much football is going on in July, it’s by design. The school year is beginning as early (earlier?) as ever. That means high school sports is following likewise. So many things to ponder. Day 1 of post-vacation for me means catching up! • Waianae? No bleachers? Word is the bleachers were condemned. All of the seats, not just the center section. If this is true, that’s bad news for the Seariders football team. […]

Miano: Back to his Kaiser roots

By Paul Honda on June 17, 2012

(More on the hiring of Rich Miano at Kaiser. The story ran in Saturday’s edition of the Star-Advertiser.) He won’t have to worry about Division I foes for now, but Miano is already looking at the specter of the growing giant that nearby Kalani is becoming. With former colleagues Cal Lee and Ron Lee on the Falcons’ staff, the program there is drawing plenty of talent, Miano said. He’s up for the challenge, arguably the most intriguing of the upcoming […]

The Big What If: Football and HHSAA

By Paul Honda on June 14, 2012

So, it’s been a couple of days since the HHSAA executive board met and voted on the proposals/recommendations that were launched out of HIADA. For the most part, the HHSAA board approved HIADA’s recommendations. But I can’t help wondering this: with the ILH abstaining from voting on Tuesday — its league president missed another board meeting and there was, technically, no next-in-line proxy present — what would’ve happened if the MIL’s proposal (at HIADA) had been on the HHSAA table? […]

HIADA, more from day one

By Jerry Campany on June 8, 2012

(More from the first day of the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference. Story is in this morning’s edition, just adding some extra info.) HHSAA wrestling official Keith Matsumoto points to Hawaii teams in 1999 and ’02 as sterling examples. “Between those two teams, those girls, we literally could’ve had an opportunity to have four out of four girls in the Olympics from Hawaii. That was my dream. The girls we had were good enough to represent the women’s team […]

Martinez returns to Moanalua

By Paul Honda on May 22, 2012

After last fall, Moanalua football coach Arnold Martinez announced that he was taking an indefinite break for personal reasons. Today, he’s officially back. He still won’t go into specifics, but maintained that his earlier decision had nothing to do with the program or the school. “The past six months I’ve coached my son’s flag football team. I’d never seen any of his practices or my daughter’s soccer games until this year,” Martinez said. Martinez said rest, prayer and meeting with […]

Supporters rally for Lobendahn (extended)

By Paul Honda on May 19, 2012

(Extended story on the support campaign for Kaiser coach Will Lobendahn. The condensed version ran in today’s Star-Advertiser.) Supporters of Kaiser football coach Will Lobendahn gathered for a second morning in a row on Lunalilo Home Road in front of the school. The mix of parents and players drew honks and cheers from some drivers. Supporters had already gathered 600 signatures on a petition, and yesterday they waved signs and wore T-shirts reading “COACH WILL HE STAY WE PLAY” in support […]

Kapolei honors signees

By Paul Honda on May 8, 2012

It was a special time for a special class, which is why they made a morning of it at Kapolei. The Hurricanes gathered, 17 strong, for a ceremony to honor the college-bound student athletes. Among the 17, who were with family at the breakfast event in the school gym, was pitcher Trey Kamachi-Allen. The senior is on his way to Arizona State, his school of choice. For four other schools, Kamachi-Allen was their choice long before ASU turned up at […]
