Green light unnecessary for Big Red aerials

By Paul Honda on October 30, 2012

There are fans who applaud Kahuku’s one-dimensional offense. There are also fans who believe that predictability will be the Red Raiders’ undoing sooner or later in the postseason. Here’s my response. There was a time (last year, preseason and early regular season, to be exact) when Kahuku worked on the passing game much more. When Lasi Livai looked like a potential 2,000-yard passer. When it seemed Kahuku might go with a balanced offense. But along the way, the Red Raiders […]

The fine line: Twilight Zone, cyberspace

By Paul Honda on October 30, 2012

Some thoughts and responses from last weekend’s games, including the tsunami warning Saturday. On the Big Island, a suspended BIIF championship game between Kealakehe and Hilo has everyone involved in a Twilight Zone of sorts. “It was weird. I think the sirens distracted both teams to an extent,” Kealakehe coach Sam Papalii said, noting that the game continued for awhile longer. Hilo coach David Baldwin’s team rallied from a 20-0 deficit to 20-14 after the Civil Defense sirens began wailing. […]

Big Red lockdown

By Paul Honda on October 26, 2012

Again. Another Kahuku lockdown of another talented team. The Red Raiders grounded and pounded their way to a 14-7 win over Leilehua tonight, filling the gaps in the trenches thoroughly after an early Mules touchdown. (See Billy “Bonecrusher” Hull’s story in Saturday morning’s Star-Advertiser.) The secondary stepped up, shutting out Leilehua’s aerial attack after the first quarter. Kahuku’s defensive system of rover-type, hybrid cover artists didn’t stop everything Justin Jenks threw in the air. Nick Rodriguez had a spectacular […]

Power outage: Mililani jolts Farrington

By Paul Honda on October 26, 2012

Power went out here at Aloha Stadium with 7:23 left in the third quarter, just after a touchdown by Farrington running back Tyler Taumua. The PAT was blocked, and Mililani leads 28-21. They’re rebooting the computer that runs the power in the stadium. Might be awhile. Kahuku and Leilehua waiting in the wings. Update 7:17 p.m.: Game back on after a 27-minute delay. Update 9:10 p.m.: Final, Mililani 42, Farrington 21. Great performance by the Trojans in every phase. Farrington dropped […]

Kamehameha-Punahou (extended)

By Paul Honda on October 26, 2012

(Here’s the original length of my story on the Kamehameha-Punahou football game. Limited space on print — this morning’s Star-Advertiser.) For the Punahou Buffanblu, getting through a regular-season finale injury-free was priority one. For Alii Pedrina, sparking the Kamehameha Warriors to victory was a bit of redemption. Pedrina, who missed several games in the heart of the ILH season, rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown as No. 5 Kamehameha held on to beat No. 2 Punahou 42-27 on Thursday […]
