Football Tour: Farrington

By Paul Honda on August 13, 2013

Tour stop: Friday, Aug. 9, 2013 Just about every team in the state except Punahou has major work in progress, replacing outgoing senior starters. Farrington lost its entire starting offensive line to graduation, 10 offensive starters in all. Factor in academic casualties in preseason, and Coach Randall Okimoto and his staff get a chance to see a lot of new guys in their rotations. Later? Who knows. But they’ve got a stellar foundation to build on defensively.

Football Tour: Damien

By Paul Honda on August 13, 2013

Tour stop: Monday, Aug. 5, 2013 There is potential on Houghtailing Street, a block north of Farrington High School, a couple blocks makai from busy Kamehameha Bakery. At Damien, despite a few early academic issues and five transfers out, coach Eddie Klaneski is working hard. He’s optimistic.

Football Tour: Kaiser

By Paul Honda on August 13, 2013

Tour stop: Friday, Aug. 2, 2013 The vibe at Kaiser is upbeat, but coach Rich Miano is optimistic in a measured way. One thing is certain, though: Linebacker/running back Fitou Fisiiahi (6) is back to peak form. He’s down from 268 pounds to 231, largely because his injured foot has healed. He also fasted from rugby and worked out hard all offseason. The Cougars will have tremendous competition in the OIA White. Kaiser lost a lot of talent to graduation, […]

Football Tour: Campbell

By Paul Honda on August 13, 2013

Tour stop: Friday, Aug. 2, 2013 There’s something just a little bit promising when a team shows up on the field early, proceeds in an orderly manner and gets the job done smoothly. That’s what we had at Campbell, just a few days after the Sabers had a solid performance in a scrimmage at Kahuku. This time, my photos were basic, no poses. I had to get from Ewa to Hawaii Kai (Kaiser) quickly. The new Sabers uniforms pop, though. […]

Oahu’s rivalry week comes early

By Jerry Campany on August 12, 2013

These are your daddy’s preseason games. So often high school coaches approach preseason games the same way NFL coaches do, getting their starters in for a series or two and settling back to watch everyone else get a chance after that. But in the first week of 2013, it seemed everyone was going for the throat. Sure, Mililani used both its quarterbacks when coach Rod York has pledged that he will choose one to be the starter when games start […]

Football Tour: Kaimuki

By Paul Honda on August 11, 2013

Tour stop: Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013 Everything is happening too fast. High school football used to be about two-a-days, three-a-days, at the start of August. But the school year begins earlier than ever, and fall sports follow suit. Kaimuki, with its dwindling enrollment — how on earth can any kid choose Kalani High School when Rainbow Drive-In is practically next door to Kaimuki? — and declining numbers in football, remains in the OIA Red East. The Bulldogs have talent, but […]
