Leilehua wins a battle of up-tempo offenses

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 17, 2013

For a while, the tempo in Saturday’s matchup between Leilehua and ‘Iolani rivaled that of the just-completed NCAA Summer League basketball at Manoa Gym. The fast-break styles of both teams produced a combined 91 points and 828 yards of total offense, and ‘Iolani coach Wendell Look summed up Leilehua’s 56-35 season-opening win with an extension of the hoops analogy. “They got a couple breakaways and dunked on our head,” he said. Leilehua scored three touchdowns on plays of more than […]

By Paul Honda on August 17, 2013

7:21 p.m. Saint Louis kicked off, Kahuku returned to its 25-yard line and we’re underway! 7:26 p.m. Saint Louis fumbles away the punt return — there was no room to breathe — and Hiapo McCandless recovers for Kahuku at the Saint Louis 42-yard line. Senior Ronald Hurlbut Jr. is starting at quarterback for Kahuku. 7:28 p.m. Kahuku punts after another third-and-long goes for naught. Saint Louis ball on its 4-yard line. 7:35 p.m. Saint Louis gets on the scoreboard, touchdown […]

Update: Leilehua 56, ‘Iolani 35, final

By Paul Honda on August 17, 2013

2:52 p.m. A whirlwind first quarter at Eddie Hamada Field. The visiting Mules took a 7-0 lead on a 4-yard blast by Lecory Wynn, but Austin Jim On’s touchdown pass brought the Raiders back. The tailback, Ikaika Piceno, scored on an option pitch to give the Mules the lead again, but ‘Iolani answered with another touchdown strike by the lefty, Jim On. Max Look picked off a Mack Eberhardt pass and returned it 40-plus yards to the Leilehua 3-yard line […]

Aiea Na Alii: Homestand-up kind of guys

By Brian McInnis on August 17, 2013

So far, Aiea is making good on its season-opening four-game homestand. Under clear skies, Na Alii dispatched Pac-Five 33-8 on Friday night, their second straight win on their own field to open the season following last week’s 35-0 pasting of Kailua. As there was no JV game (Pac-Five doesn’t have a JV team) the elevated terrain really shined in daylight during tipoff with Pearl Harbor as the backdrop. Aiea’s next two outings at home, though, figure not to be so […]

Sua-Godinet key to Kamehameha’s title hopes

By Billy Hull on August 17, 2013

Kamehameha coach Doug Cosbie doesn’t have a lot to worry about defensively. Two games into his first season as Warriors head coach, Cosbie has watched his talented unit give up a total of three points in wins over Castle and Farrington. First-string running back Kaulana Apelu suffered an injury against the Knights, but after seeing the sixth-ranked Warriors beat up on No. 9 Farrington 38-3 on Friday night, running back depth isn’t a concern. Seniors Brandon Kahookele and Kainoa Simao […]

Waipahu’s youngsters get their shot

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 16, 2013

With two first-time starters leading the offense, Waipahu’s defense gave the youngsters a chance to settle into the Marauders’ season opener on Friday night. Academic probation left Waipahu without its regular starters in the backfield, and sophomore quarterback Gavin Marques and running back Matthew Leilua combined for 227 rushing yards, with Marques adding two touchdown passes in his varsity debut in the Marauders’ 19-14 win Friday night. Five lost fumbles, three in the first half, hampered Waipahu’s offense. But the […]

McKinley Tigers feature one wild cat

By Jerry Campany on August 16, 2013

The excitement is back in McKinley. It might not add up to more wins, but it makes every minute the Tigers are on offense a chance to see something special. Denzel Kalahiki-Gasper took over for Marcus Aikau in the second half of Friday night’s loss to Kapolei. He led the team to its only score and had the Hurricanes wondering what is coming next. He is a one-man wildcat offense, whether he means to be or not. Kalahiki-Gasper started last […]

Update: Kamehameha 38, Farrington 3, final

By Paul Honda on August 16, 2013

7:12 p.m. JV game, Kamehameha won 10-7. Varsity is just starting. I’m expecting a low-scoring game. Kamehameha is learning a new system under new coach Doug Cosbie. The Warriors offense scored one touchdown in a 15-0 win over Castle last week. Farrington’s coming off a 33-16 loss to Waianae. 7:17 p.m. Long run by Kamehameha’s quarterback set up a touchdown pass that was called back by penalty (ineligible man downfield). 7:22 p.m. Third and long, nice rollout against a heavy […]
