Aiea might have something to Say about Willes

By Jerry Campany on August 20, 2013

There will certainly be no secrets when No. 5 Waianae visits fellow unbeaten Aiea on Saturday night. The game features two coaches who have been going at it ever since Danny Matsumoto took over at Waianae in 2000. Wendell Say has been at Aiea since 1991. Despite Waianae’s reputation as a perennial power, Say has always had his team prepared for the tough-running bunch. Matsumoto holds the career edge 7-5 and has won in each of the past two years […]

Pupule’s Top 10 ballot: Week 3

By Paul Honda on August 20, 2013

Here it go. Pupule time. How did I vote this week in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10? 1. Saint Louis 2. Punahou 3. Kahuku 4. Waianae 5. Campbell 6. Kamehameha 7. Leilehua 8. Mililani 9. ‘Iolani 10. Lahainaluna Here’s the Top 10 poll. The biggest differences between my ballot and the Top 10: Kamehameha and Campbell. First, as I’ve written before, polls are not an exact science. To me, high school Top 10 polls have been and always will be […]

Video: #7 Leilehua at #8 ‘Iolani

By Paul Honda on August 20, 2013

Leilehua vs. ‘Iolani was a tug of war between superb coaching staffs, and a lot of fun to watch again on video.

Saint Louis climbs back on top

By Dave Reardon on August 20, 2013

Before Saint Louis took on Kahuku on Saturday, many observers considered it a stretch to believe the Crusaders could pull off an upset of the two-time defending state champions. I was among them, fairly firm among the consensus pegging the Red Raiders as preseason No. 1 and not fully convinced the Crusaders had gotten past last year’s disappointing 5-5 campaign. Yes, beating Kahuku would be a stretch. But that’s exactly what multi-weaponed Saint Louis did on offense in winning 45-24 […]

Breaking down my top 10 poll for football

By Billy Hull on August 19, 2013

After watching five of the top six football teams in the state over the past four days in person, I feel like I have a pretty good handle on my Top 10 ballot this week. The Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 poll officially comes out in Tuesday’s paper, but here’s how my ballot looks heading into Week 3: 1. Saint Louis 2. Punahou 3. Kahuku 4. Waianae 5. Kamehameha 6. Mililani 7. Leilehua 8. Campbell 9. ‘Iolani 10. Aiea The three questions […]

Football Tour: Waianae

By Paul Honda on August 18, 2013

Photos courtesy of Eli Kapu. A year removed from key departures, including the graduation of defensive cornerstone Kennedy Tulimasealii, it would be easy to doubt Waianae’s defensive prowess. But coach Danny Matsumoto and his staff always seem to get the most out of the defensive unit, and so many times, in so many places, a unit comes back even stronger without a superstar. Time will tell at Torii Field.

Football Tour: Kalani

By Paul Honda on August 18, 2013

Photos courtesy of Eli Kapu. I didn’t make it to Kalani, not with six teams on the photo tour schedule on one day. Mahalos to Eli for the photos. The only posed shot was with Noah Brum, the second-year starting quarterback. The Falcons have some improvement each year under coach Greg Taguchi. Snagging a playoff berth in the very competitive OIA White would be quite a prize. More Kalani football: • Kalani football: 2013 team page • Kalani football home […]
