Preview: Friday’s football matchups (8/30)

By Paul Honda on August 30, 2013

A game-by-game look at Friday’s football matchups: No. 4 Kamehameha (3-0) vs. No. 1 Saint Louis (2-0) The ILH regular season opens with an explosion. The Warriors have beaten the Crusaders in three of the past four meetings and five of the past eight going back to the 2009 season. Last fall, Kamehameha was pass-heavy in a 34-23 loss, but bounced back two weeks later for a balanced attack in a 43-19 victory. The leading rusher in the Warriors’ win, […]

Kalani comes back from its darkest day

By Jerry Campany on August 29, 2013

Call it the Carney Curse. When Kalaheo traveled to Kaiser to play Kalani in 2010, Mustangs running back Jesse Carney ran over the Falcons for 379 yards on 15 carries in a 59-22 blowout. Fans took time out of their day back then to call the Star-Advertiser to complain about the Mustangs running it up on the OIA’s perennial whipping boys. A Scout.com report that listed the 6-foot, 235-pound senior as a verbal commit to Hawaii, is off center. “I’d like to keep my options open,” he told me on Tuesday afternoon. As he told the Star-Advertiser on Aug. 2, he has a handful of offers and no concrete decision. In fact, Fisiiahi told […]

Crusaders wary of being the team to beat

By Jerry Campany on August 27, 2013

When Saint Louis slapped Kahuku around in the fourth quarter of a showdown two weeks ago, Crusaders coach Matt Wright wasn’t a big fan of what it meant for his program. It was a good start, but there was so much more to work on. Sure, every team wants to be No. 1 at the end of the year. But taking the top spot early in August just gives opponents an extra incentive to knock a team off its perch. […]
