Something special about this Mililani team

By Jerry Campany on August 31, 2013

The Mililani football team had almost nothing going for it early in Friday’s win at Waianae. So the Trojans turned to special teams to make things right. The Trojans trailed 14-0 in the second quarter, punted the first five times they had the ball and collected only two first downs. Feature back Vavae Malepeai couldn’t get anything going on the ground, being held to 16 yards on nine carries, and quarterback McKenzie Milton hooked up on only three of his […]

Aiea’s Igafo leads solid defensive effort

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 31, 2013

Aiea went with a wing-T look to take an early lead against Campbell on Friday night but struggled to string first downs together after the Sabers adjusted to the scheme. Campbell went on to win 28-7, but Na Alii stayed within a score into the fourth quarter thanks to a defensive effort led by linebacker Glen Igafo. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound senior had six tackles for loss, pushing the Sabers back 26 yards. “Our defense had a good game plan, but […]

Campbell QB Hurd attacks by land and air

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 31, 2013

Campbell coach Amosa Amosa gave quarterback Isaac Hurd a number to shoot for in the summer pass league. “In pass league if you’re not completing 70 percent of your passes you’re not doing much because there’s no rush, there’s no pressure,” Amosa said. Completion percentage is one of the few stats Amosa tracks in summer play and Hurd hit his targets 72 percent of the time in what his coach described as “the best pass league we’ve had at Campbell […]

OK Kamehameha, we see you

By Billy Hull on August 31, 2013

Forget for a minute that I only considered the other two ILH Division I teams for my No. 1 ranking last week, but I went as far as to place Waianae ahead of Kamehameha. Oops. Even as Saint Louis held a 17-10 third-quarter lead against Kamehameha on Friday night at Aloha Stadium, I was already coming up with a way to justify moving the Warriors up on my ballot despite a potential loss. The Kamehameha secondary quickly made sure that […]

Update: Kamehameha 38, Saint Louis 17, final

By Paul Honda on August 30, 2013

9:13 p.m. This is turning out to be a defensive struggle. The game was scoreless until Christopher Quinn’s 20-yard field goal gave the No. 1 Crusaders a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter. Kamehameha drove patiently and scored on a screen pass from Noah Sua-Godinet to running back Brandon Kahookele for a 7-3 Warriors lead. Just a few plays later, however, Ryder Kuhns fired a bullet to wide receiver Drew Kobayashi on a simple sideline pattern, and Kobayashi went […]

Update: ‘Iolani 35, St. Francis 0, final

By Paul Honda on August 30, 2013

Max Look scored on a 49-yard punt return as the Raiders took a 28-0 lead into halftime in the first varsity football game between the two schools. The Raiders got an early touchdown pass from Easton Tsubata, then Jordan Ross sprinted down the left sideline for a 50-yard scoring run. Look’s punt return to paydirt gave the home team a 21-0 lead with 2:55 left in the opening quarter. Running back Brent Tonaki’s 1-yard run up the middle opened the […]

Pupule’s football ballot, week 4

By Paul Honda on August 30, 2013

I am a strength of schedule kind of guy. Always have been, I suppose; but as with everything, there are exceptions. Not just yet, though, not in this year’s Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 voting. Unlike most years, we just don’t have a clear-cut dominant team. Yet. We’ve got a lot of interesting, talented, elite teams. As we enter Week 4 of the prep season. Saint Louis. Punahou. Kamehameha. All powerful, it seems, with their own unique strengths. It just might […]
