Top Players: RBs (9/12)

By Paul Honda on September 12, 2013

First, a random examination of top running backs and their numbers. (My ranked order is at the bottom of this post.) Plus, style comparisons. Wayne Taulapapa, Punahou, 5-11, 185, So. 53 attempts, 329 yards, two touchdowns, 109.7 yards per game, 6.2 yards per carry. Two of their three opponents were elite teams: Mililani, Helix (Calif.). He had a monster 30-153 game against Helix, a CIF powerhouse. He didn’t start when the season began, but it’s clear that he’s capable of […]

Governors get back to what works

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 12, 2013

It took a little while for Farrington’s running game to find some traction this season before Sanele Lavatai and Vimoto Fuimaono broke loose for dual 100-yard games last week. Lavatai went for 157 yards and three touchdowns and Fuimaono finished with 110 yards on just seven carries in a 31-14 win over Kailua. The accomplishment had become relatively commonplace last year when Tyler Taumua and Abraham Silva both powered past the century mark in five games: Kaimuki—Silva 176, Taumua 115. […]

Leilehua looks to bounce back this week

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 12, 2013

Losing streaks don’t come often at Leilehua. Coming into this season, the Mules are 15-6 in games following a loss during Nolan Tokuda’s eight years as Leilehua’s head coach (not counting 2011, when Mark Kurisu served as interim head coach). Last year, Leilehua rebounded from a loss to Aiea with a 47-0 win at Kapolei. The Mules later narrowly avoided dropping consecutive games when they followed an overtime loss to Campbell with an overtime win over Waipahu. Leilehua’s resilience will […]

Seariders no stranger to Ewa Beach

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 11, 2013

The road to Ewa Beach has become quite familiar for the Waianae football team. The sixth-ranked Seariders will board the bus again on Friday for an OIA Red West game at No. 8 Campbell, the third straight meeting in the series to be played on the Sabers’ home field. Waianae (4-1, 2-1 OIA Red West) played all of its games on the road last year while the school’s bleachers were renovated, though the Seariders were the designated home team in a […]

Kamehameha’s Kahookele up against it

By Jerry Campany on September 11, 2013

If Kamehameha running back Brandon Kahookele wants to walk out of Aloha Stadium a winner on Saturday, he might want to take a trip up to Manoa to get a little advice from former Kahuku standout Aofaga Wily. Punahou’s defense has allowed a rusher to top 100 yards only six times since 2010, and Wily has done it to them three of those times. Even better for Kahookele and the bruisers in front of him, Kahuku won all three. No. […]

Video: #3 Saint Louis vs. Pac-Five

By Paul Honda on September 11, 2013

For a very brief moment, the Division II Wolfpack seemed like they might stick with the D-I Crusaders. But coming off a loss to Kamehameha, Saint Louis played like a team on a mission. Or crusade.

It was a runaway, not a run-up

By Paul Honda on September 10, 2013

For fans who weren’t at Aloha Stadium on Friday when No. 3 Saint Louis defeated Pac-Five 73-6, it may seem like some piling on was going on. For me, a neutral observer, it wasn’t a run-up-the-score scenario. It was simply a matter of an extremely talented, senior-heavy, numbers-deep team facing a relatively inexperienced team with low numbers. Here’s what I think. 1. Saint Louis began to use reserves in the second quarter and continued to do this to the end. […]

Video: Farrington vs. Kailua

By Paul Honda on September 9, 2013

The Governors got quarterback Montana Liana back from injury (knee) and improved to 2-0 in OIA Red East play with a 31-14 win over the Surfriders. Running back Sanele Lavatai didn’t carry the ball until the second quarter, but finished with 157 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. Highlights include post-game interviews with Lavatai, Aaron Kesi and coaches Randall Okimoto of Farrington and Gary Rosolowich of Kailua.
