Farrington wins despite fumble-itis

By Paul Honda on October 8, 2013

It was near-perfect execution in all phases for Farrington for a half against Kahuku. In their OIA Red East showdown with No. 5 Kahuku, the underdog Governors led 14-0 in the third quarter when the pigskin became difficult to grasp. They fumbled three times, but lost the ball just once. On an apparent fourth fumble, by quarterback Montana Liana after taking a hit from the Red Raiders, Kahuku recovered. But officials ruled the play an incomplete pass. Video showed that […]

Video: #5 Kahuku vs. Farrington

By Paul Honda on October 7, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 There’s something about Kahuku-Farrington, The Rivalry. I’ve seen plenty of old, traditional neighbor programs lock horns for intense battles all over the state. But Kahuku-Farrington, or Farrington-Kahuku if you prefer, has a different flavor. A unique zeal. How else do you explain such intensity for two teams when one is (or was) unranked and the other is having a less-than-perfect season so far? It doesn’t matter what has happened before these teams meet. Fans on one […]

The ILH released its football playoffs schedule on Monday, with Punahou having locked down the regular-season title. The Buffanblu, who have won the past two ILH titles, play the winner of a Saturday, Oct. 19 game between Kamehameha and Saint Louis on Friday, Oct. 25, at Aloha Stadium. ‘Iolani looks to extend its D-II title streak to 10 years when it opens the postseason against St. Francis on Saturday, Oct. 19. Should either Saint Louis or Kamehameha win the D-1 […]

Anuenue may test 8-man waters

By Paul Honda on October 7, 2013

There are programs that flourish with numbers, and there are programs that are simply small. Anuenue falls in the latter category. Na Koa is nearing the end of their seventh season of varsity football and it has been their most difficult. They fielded a hardy group of 18 to 20 players most of the way, though they had 24 on the gridiron in Saturday’s game against Kalani. In previous years, Anuenue had many players with experience. This year, they had […]

Video: #1 Punahou vs. #4 Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on October 6, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 This started as a defensive duel, a 7-0 game going into the second quarter. Then each offense caught fire. It was a battle on many fronts. Punahou quarterback Larry Tuileta took his share of sacks, but the risk-reward paid off. Saint Louis quarterback Ryder Kuhns delivered big, too, finding his deep threats. In the end, Punahou’s ground game, with that unique mix of three-back sets, trumped all. It was their closest margin of victory […]

Tuitama comes up big for Kaimuki

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 6, 2013

Randon Tuitama’s final performance for Kaimuki was among his finest. The senior running back ran for 184 yards on 22 carries and scored two touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 28-13 season-ending loss to Castle on Friday. The result gave Castle (3-5, 2-4) the OIA Red East’s final playoff berth, while Kaimuki ended the season at 1-7 and 0-6 in league play. Kaimuki twice took leads on Tuitama’s scoring runs, but couldn’t hold off a Castle attack led by quarterback Stephen Lee, […]

So Punahou is No. 1, what about No. 2?

By Billy Hull on October 6, 2013

I‘ve got a Star-Advertiser Top 10 football ballot to fill out by Monday at noon. No. 1 is easy. Punahou held on to that ranking with a 35-32 win over Saint Louis on Friday in one of the better high school football games in recent memory. The Buffanblu are 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the ILH, wrapping up the No. 1 seed in the ILH Division I playoffs. The only way Punahou doesn’t advance to the state tournament would be […]
