Cougars still looking for a challenge

By Jerry Campany on November 9, 2013

Kaiser coach Rich Miano took one very valuable piece of information out of his team’s 41-21 win over Pearl City in the OIA White championship game. “This was the first game, I think, where going into the fourth quarter it was close and we did a nice job of responding to the adversity,” Miano said. “It’s not going to be any easier moving forward, but at the same time, I’m glad we got this one under our belt.” The Cougars […]

Video: Pearl City coach Robin Kami

By Paul Honda on November 9, 2013

It was the kind of championship game that went, more or less, by the book. The dominant, unbeaten (in Division I) team takes one, two, three solar plexus shots from the fearless challenger, then turns around and gradually buries that foe brick by brick. Pearl City showed why it earned a state-tournament berth, using a lot of grit and creativity to keep up with the mighty Cougars. Kaiser never faltered, however, and kept doing what it does best: pound defenses […]

Farrington, Campbell advance to D1 semis

By Billy Hull on November 8, 2013

The first round of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships kicked off Friday night with the OIA scoring both wins in Division I. Over on Maui, Farrington scored an emotional victory over Baldwin, defeating the Bears 21-3. Sanele Lavatai rushed for 105 of Farrington’s 211 total yards on the ground and quarterback Montana Liana was 14-for-27 for 196 yards. Liana’s only touchdown pass was 12 yards to Jacob Baguio, who had eight receptions for 115 yards. The Governors honored […]

LIVE BLOG: Campbell 42, Hilo 27, final

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2013

KEAAU — It’s less than two hours until kickoff for the Hilo Vikings and Campbell Sabers. It’s a classic us-versus-them scenario for the BIIF champion Vikings, who have been unranked all season long. They’re on a nine-game win streak, though it would be hard to find anyone outside the Big Island who knows this. They are, as Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said, a classic running team with a strong front seven defensively. How good will Hilo be tonight? My guess […]
