Texas Tech makes offer to Ulu-Perry

By Paul Honda on February 7, 2014

Signing day for football seniors has passed, but there’s no break for recruiters and athletes in the class of 2015. Texas Tech made that clear on Tuesday with a scholarship offer to Saint Louis All-State left tackle Fred Ulu-Perry. Texas Tech fan site 247Sports.com posted the news. The junior is one of the more intriguing athletes in the state, a 6-foot-2, 310-pound athlete with raw strength and nimble feet. He shows that unique agility on the basketball court for the […]

How far should a coach go for a recruit?

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2014

Stories like this — Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini wrestling a potential recruit — are more than just a bit entertaining. Social media, getting to know today’s kids… the coaches will to take even just a tiny step out of their comfort zones are going to get an edge. The ones who sit in their box and expect kids to come to them on the coach’s terms… sorry, but this isn’t 1975 anymore. I’ve come to learn, in a quickly-moving […]

Signing Day (extended)

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2014

(Here’s an extended report on Wednesday’s letter-of-intent signing ceremony hosted by PIAA at the Sheraton Waikiki. The first version was published in this morning’s Star-Advertiser. See Tuesday’s short story and photo gallery on Prep World here.) Larry Tuileta broke some bleeding green hearts, but otherwise the University of Hawaii netted a nice senior class on Wednesday morning during the PIAA Letter-of-Intent signing ceremony at the Sheraton Waikiki. Tuileta had orally committed to play football and volleyball for UH last summer. […]

Signing Day: Tuileta’s dilemma and more

By Paul Honda on February 5, 2014

Larry Tuileta, Punahou’s All-State quarterback, spurned Hawaii and signed with USC this morning at PIAA’s Letter-of-Intent signing ceremony at the Sheraton Waikiki. In the story at the Star-Advertiser’s breaking news this morning, “Tui” explains how USC got involved long after he had committed to play football and volleyball at UH. He will be a preferred walk-on at USC (football) with the emphasis on volleyball. He turned down a straight-out scholie from Manoa. From what I understand, UH was counting on […]

Lee excited about return to Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on February 3, 2014

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu is as competitive, intense and, in some ways, cut-throat, as any Hawaii-based league imaginable. And that’s just in academics. Now put the most heralded prep coach in island history back in the saddle at Saint Louis, and football brains across the state might just explode. With Cal Lee back at Saint Louis (see Dave Reardon’s breaking story this afternoon on the Star-Advertiser site), that adds to some pretty huge football mind power in the ILH: […]

Here’s a look at many of the local players who may play college football next season. This is, by no means, and end-all type of list. Our recruiting story ran in this morning’s Star-Advertiser and focused on Division I (FBS) university prospects. This Poi Report update will focus on current high school players (seniors […]

Crusader strong: Breaking ground

By Paul Honda on January 22, 2014

They went and did it. The Saint Louis Crusaders began the first phase of the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Center with an official ground-breaking ceremony this morning. Construction is already underway for the new weight room, which will be situated on the ground level of the new parking garage. Athletic Director Ed Paola said the lockerrooms will be built after that, along with a new gymnasium that will be located where the current lockerrooms are. Brother Gerber Fieldhouse is long […]

3 Hawaii football players honored

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 16, 2014

The 2015 graduating class featured considerable star power this past football season and three players from Hawaii high schools received national recognition on Student Sports’ Junior All-America teams. Saint Louis offensive lineman Fred Ulu-Perry made the second team. Two defensive linemen, Farrington’s Breiden Fehoko and Kamehameha’s Mika Tafua, were honorable mention picks. Another name familiar to Hawaii football fans earned a spot on the team. Austin Kafentzis, the son of former University of Hawaii cornerback Kyle Kafentzis and a quarterback […]
