Video: Mariota works out at alma mater

By Paul Honda on August 4, 2014

It’s not often that a Heisman Trophy candidate works out with a high school team, but Marcus Mariota was hard at work with Saint Louis quarterbacks on Friday afternoon. It was close to 90 degrees, but Mariota and the Crusaders share so much in common, including work ethic. Some things never change.

No. 4 Kamehameha All-State football

By Jerry Campany on August 4, 2014

The power running game is back at Kamehameha. Coach Doug Cosbie‘s smashmouth system was successful last year, but injuries forced him to split carries between Brandon Kahookele and Kainoa Simao, leaving them shut out of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s first team when All-State selections were announced. Looking back on selections of the past, having a 9-2 Kamehameha team virtually assures a spot among the elite. The Warriors have not had a running back on the first team since Ryan Ho in […]

No. 5 Kahuku All-State football

By Jerry Campany on August 3, 2014

Kahuku has had more mentions on the All-State first team than any other OIA school, but one name stands above all others this year. New coach Lee Leslie and his Raiders have dedicated the season to Chris and Maake Kemoeatu after the former needed a new kidney and his big brother was there for him. Both have Super Bowl rings, and Leslie hopes to have both of them on his staff next year. Chris Kemoeatu was first team All-State for […]

Saint Louis-Kailua, post-scrimmage

By Paul Honda on August 2, 2014

No big surprises at Kalaepohaku on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders moved the ball efficiently and often through the air. Ryder Kuhns was sharp, getting the ball deep to Drew Kobayashi early, spreading the ball all over the field. The receivers are making the right reads and their QB is on point. Kailua’s back-to-glory-days offense is about smashmouth football. They had some nice breakaways, but for the most part kept working on the intricacies of the offense, mostly handoffs between the […]

Players all smiles as Lee Bros. grind away

By Paul Honda on August 2, 2014

Cal Lee and Ron Lee are back at it on the hill at Kalaepohaku. Just hours after a scrimmage with big, talented Kapolei, they were on the field again. Ron, the offensive coordinator, was there by 7 a.m., studying film from the scrimmage. Cal was there on the field just a little while later. By the time they were done with practice around 6 p.m. — with a certain Heisman Trophy candidate working out with the varsity — they were […]

Buffanblu don’t miss a beat

By Paul Honda on August 2, 2014

Farrington looks quite crisp considering it’s just one week into preseason. Two scrimmages in — against ILH powerhouses Kamehameha and Punahou, no less — and it is clear the Governors are bent on expanding their offensive menu. Often, they’ve lined up in the spread to give Montana Liana more options in the aerial game. But they’ve also lined up in slot-I (or I-slot, whichever tickles your fancy) sets and gashed for yardage inside, too. This morning at Alexander Field, new […]
