All-State football, 1972-present

By Jerry Campany on August 8, 2014

During the Star-Advertiser’s countdown of the top 10 teams in preseason we have been publishing each team’s first-team All-State players. Now it is time for every school’s greatest heroes. The first All-State team was published by the Honolulu Advertiser in 1972 and the Star-Bulletin followed with its first team in 1977, satisfied with publishing only all-league teams during that span using the rational that they hadn’t seen enough neighbor-island teams to accurately choose the best. The Star-Bulletin did give out […]

Moanalua’s Cauley just couldn’t stay away

By Nick Abramo on August 8, 2014

Sometimes, a man’s hankering for football needs to be quenched. And so it was for Jason Cauley, who had just moved to Hawaii four years ago and felt the need to get back into doing what he loves — coaching football. The urge hit him almost immediately after arriving from Mobile, Ala., where he had been an assistant along with his brother, Rick Cauley, at Murphy High School. And then, bam, things happened fast, really fast, for the man who […]

Preseason Top Players: Additions, notes

By Paul Honda on August 8, 2014

Beautiful layout by Curtis Murayama in this morning’s Star-Advertiser. I’m not 100 percent into preseason stuff, probably never will be. But the fact is, as fans we love, love, love preseason rankings of teams. We also love to examine the field of players and recognize the best. Especially in football. Here’s what I wanted to add to the lists we published this morning, but it’ll wait until the updates here on Prep World. Additions to “Best of the rest”: WR […]

Kaiser, ‘Iolani among those left out of top 10

By Paul Honda on August 7, 2014

It’s through no fault of their own, really. Every year, the Star-Advertiser Football Preseason Top 10 is released in countdown fashion. By midseason, few fans remember who was ranked where. But it’s safe to say, those teams that were neglected by voters — coaches and media — can use the snub as fuel. That might be the case for Kaiser, which dominated the OIA White last year and went on to capture the Division II state title. First-year head coach […]

No. 1 Punahou All-State football

By Jerry Campany on August 7, 2014

Pupule Paul Honda is crazier than you think. The Prince of Preps actually rates as many high school players as he can and plugs them into his NCAA football game, replaying games that he has already seen. He already has Vavae Malepaei at 99 and Wayne Taulapapa at 98, feel free to add you rankings in the comments to this post. He can’t wait to play the games that were canceled this weekend. He only does teams year-by-year, but if […]

Video: Saint Louis QB Ryder Kuhns

By Paul Honda on August 6, 2014

Statistically, Ryder Kuhns was phenomenal in 2013: 2,016 passing yards, 66.3 completion rate, 25 touchdowns, just six picks and a passer rating of 194.57. This fall, he could surpass those numbers in offensive coordinator Ron Lee’s no-holds-barred, wide-open attack.

First-year starter Ephraim Tuliloa talks about taking the reins for the defending state champions.
