Video: #10 Kapolei at #5 Kahuku

By Paul Honda on August 19, 2014

Extended version No. 10 Kapolei visits No. 5 Kahuku at Carleton Weimer Field. Because of inclement weather last week, this is the first game of the season for both teams, and it’s also the debut of Red Raiders coach Lee Leslie.

Pac-Five’s Ferreira sets Oahu passing record

By Billy Hull on August 17, 2014

Pac-Five opened its 2014 season in record-breaking fashion on Saturday night as sophomore quarterback Kainoa Ferreira set an Oahu high school record for passing yards in a game, finishing with 515 and six touchdowns in a 54-37 win over King Kekaulike on Maui. Ferreira, making his varsity debut, completed 34 of 64 passes to break the record held by former Wolfpack QB PJ Minaya by 4 yards. They are the only two Oahu players ever to top the 500-yard passing […]

Can Mililani keep this offensive pace all year?

By Paul Honda on August 17, 2014

You’d have to play Madden or NCAA 14, load up your lineup with All-Pros (or All-Americans) and go no-huddle (sometimes hurry up) all game long to rack up crazy numbers like this. Yes, the scoreboard at John Kauinana Stadium binged and banged like a pinball machine on Saturday night. For both Mililani and Saint Louis. Keeping stats would’ve been much simpler if the UH statistics crew (with all their fancy machinery) would’ve been there. Instead, it was left to this […]

Ching takes over as Kalani’s new QB

By Billy Hull on August 16, 2014

Tyler Ching put down his bat and glove following Kalani’s baseball season in the spring and immediately reached for a football. A linebacker on the Falcons’ six-win team in 2013, Ching knew there was an open spot to fill at quarterback and decided to give it a shot. Three months later, he found himself behind center on opening night Saturday and threw for 250 yards and four touchdowns in a 32-0 win over Waialua in an OIA Division II game […]

LIVE BLOG: Saint Louis at Mililani

By Paul Honda on August 16, 2014

5:30 p.m. JV game is entering the fourth quarter. Saint Louis leads Mililani 18-14. It’s a beautiful, sunny, breezy afternoon at John Kauinana Stadium. The kind of day that makes me feel grateful to be alive and enjoying another great high school game. Still thinking about Kapolei and the loss of a player’s dad at the Kahuku game last night. My thoughts and prayers are with the young man, his family and the Hurricane ohana. The varsity game here is […]

Na Menehune come up big in opener

By Nick Abramo on August 16, 2014

One of the beautiful things about football is that the complexion of a game can change in a matter of minutes. For instance, take Moanalua’s 30-23 season-opening victory over No. 8 Waianae on Friday night. When the third-quarter closed, all that was left for Moanalua to do was control the ball and the clock, wrap up what looked like it would be a blowout, get on the bus and get out of there. Na Menehune, after all, held a commanding […]

Graduates help Pearl City reload

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 16, 2014

Pearl City is in rebuilding mode after losing 33 seniors off a state tournament team. Having Dominic Maneafaiga among the returnees is a pretty good place to start. Maneafaiga, a senior running back, scored on a 44-yard punt return, a 1-yard reception and a 32-yard run in Pearl City’s 34-6 season-opening win over Roosevelt on Friday. Maneafaiga also kicked three PATs to account for 21 total points for the Chargers and had a 90-yard punt return called back due to […]

Kahuku-Kapolei: Tragedy for Hurricane ohana

By Paul Honda on August 16, 2014

No mistaking it, Kahuku is still a run-first team. Forty carries for 222 yards on the ground say it all, especially against a big, physical Kapolei defense in a tough 33-19 nonconference win. But it was the way the Red Raiders amassed their yardage that was different. Counters. Options, which weren’t altogether different, except that quarterback Tuli Wily-Matagi was able to stop on a dime before pitching and fire spirals for first downs Over time, the variations of Kahuku’s offense […]
