LIVE BLOG: #2 Mililani 41, #10 Kapolei 14

By Paul Honda on August 30, 2014

It’s warm. It’s muggy. No breeze. For the Kapolei Hurricanes, it’s no big deal. This is their home turf. They embrace the humidity and sweltering conditions. But I think the visiting Mililani Trojans and their explosive offense won’t mind one bit. By 6 p.m. (or so) kickoff, the temperature will cool a bit. Can Kapolei (0-2, 0-2 OIA) pull off an upset? Sure. The bigger question is, can the ‘Canes maneuver into the playoffs with the best seeding possible? Mililani […]

Govs’ defense gets it done

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 30, 2014

Farrington gave up yards in bunches on Friday. But the Governors protected enough territory to keep Moanalua at arm’s length in a 47-27 win. Na Menehune generated 577 passing yards with receiver Karson Cruz accounting for 310 and two touchdowns. But the Farrington defense came up with four takeaways, one leading directly a touchdown and the other three coming after Moanalua had moved inside Govs’ 15. Na Menehune had first-and-goal on three occasions in the second half, only be thwarted […]

Moanalua receivers do it all

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 30, 2014

Moanalua coach Jason Cauley knew he had a playmaker in receiver Karson Cruz. He just had to convince Cruz — who also plays basketball and volleyball — of his potential on the football field. “I keep telling him ‘you’re a football guy too,’ ” Cauley said. “You just don’t know it, but you’re a football guy. “I had a conversation with him the other day and I was like, ‘I know volleyball is your ticket to college, but if you […]

Leslie has Kahuku quietly rolling

By Billy Hull on August 30, 2014

After the uproar surrounding Lee Leslie‘s hiring at Kahuku earlier this year, it’s hard to imagine the attention not shining brightly on the first-year Red Raiders coach. Somehow, that’s exactly the case despite Kahuku’s impressive 3-0 start. The Red Raiders continued to roll in the OIA Red with a 41-7 win over McKinley on Friday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. Despite moving to 3-0 and up to third in the Star-Advertiser Top 10 poll, Kahuku has rolled along quietly as […]

Punahou: Must be seen to be believed

By Paul Honda on August 29, 2014

I‘ve seen Mililani and came away impressed, wowed enough to change my ballot and place the Trojans atop my list at No. 1. Sure, Punahou is defending champion and deserves to be at the top until they prove otherwise, right? Well… I’ve seen Punahou now. I’m changing my vote back to the Puns. (Don’t e-mail me about bad nicknames. The school’s publications use “Puns” and I’m about to refer to the team multiple times, so please…) I just saw a […]

LIVE BLOG: Punahou 55, Saint Louis 7

By Paul Honda on August 29, 2014

First quarter Ephraim Tuliloa finds Kanawai Noa in single coverage deep for a 45-yard bomb. That’s the kind of big-play action I remember from the Punahou-Farrington scrimmage weeks ago. Buffanblu 7, Crusaders 0, 3:11. Second quarter Saint Louis had a nice drive going, getting to the PUN 7-yard line, but fumbled on a run play. Three plays later, Tuliloa launched a 43-yard bomb to Noa for another touchdown. Not sure why they’re trying to cover Noa with just one defender, […]

LIVE BLOG: Kahuku 41, McKinley 7, Final

By Billy Hull on August 29, 2014

The third-ranked Kahuku Red Raiders are rolling under first-year coach Lee Leslie. After an impressive 33-19 win over a tough Kapolei squad in the opener, Kahuku rolled Waipahu 51-10 last week. The Red Raiders have won four in a row against the Tiges since McKinley beat the Red Raiders 14-13 in 2006. McKinley put up 28 points against Kahuku last season but was held to seven in its first game against Leilehua. The Tigers had to forfeit their season opener […]

LIVE BLOG: Pac-Five 26, St. Francis 21

By Paul Honda on August 29, 2014

Traffic this afternoon — I left town around 1:30 p.m. — was smooth, effortless. Beautiful. From my vantage point here at the stadium, it looks like it’s moving nicely in both directions. (It had been jammed up in the other direction from the West side due to a car accident.) I’ve been looking forward to both of these ILH league-opening games for awhile. St. Francis is 2-0. The Saints are unbeaten! They have decisive wins over Keaau and Holy Trinity […]
