Defending champs still kings of the hill

By Jerry Campany on September 15, 2014

To many poll voters, you have to beat the best to be the best. With so few meaningful games so far in the fall season, defending state champions in football and volleyball have kept their holds on the top spot in the Star-Advertiser’s polls. Punahou remains No. 1 in football while Kamehameha keeps the top spot in volleyball. Both teams have held those spots all season. Star-Advertiser football poll: 1. Punahou, 2. Mililani, 3. Kahuku, 4. Kamehameha, 5. Farrington, 6. […]

Loss may have strengthened Castle

By Nick Abramo on September 15, 2014

Castle was a real pain in Kahuku’s side in Kaneohe on Friday, but only for a quarter and a half. After that, the Red Raiders went into battle mode and scored 38 unanswered points in a 56-19 win. Knights coach Nelson Maeda, who is known for squeezing the most out of his teams and individual players, looked like a genius midway through the second quarter. That’s when Castle held a 19-18 lead and were in charge of the game’s momentum […]

Farrington’s Liana starts to fling it

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 13, 2014

Over his two-plus years as Farrington’s starting quarterback, Montana Liana spent most of his time handing the ball to a series of productive Governor running backs. And why not? Liana shared the backfield with All-State running backs Abraham Silva and Tyler Taumua as a sophomore and gave the ball to Sanele Lavatai with regularity last year. The Governors’ running game continued to churn through four games this fall with Ranan Mamiya and Challen Faamatau powering the offense. Liana took a […]

LIVE BLOG: #8 Saint Louis 55, ‘Iolani 20

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2014

One team is finding its identity, learning new verbiage from a staff led by two of the most Yoda-ish gurus around. The other is a Division II powerhouse, a testament to quality skills and coaching over sheer size and numbers. Saint Louis and ‘Iolani are about to kick off, and it’s scorching hot down on the field, probably around 90-91 degrees with trades 2-3 mph, if that. Nothing like daytime football at ‘Iolani, literally a stone’s throw from Waikiki. Saint […]

Cal makes offer to St. Louis WR Kobayashi

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2014

Saint Louis wide receivers get plenty of attention every day from Cal — Coach Cal Lee, that is. As of Friday, however, it was another Cal that took interest in a speedy junior wide receiver for the Crusaders. The University of California at Berkeley made Drew Kobayashi a scholarship offer, his first and probably not his last. Kobayashi’s mother, Resi, confirmed the offer by Cal. Colorado has also shown serious interest, asking for his transcripts this week. Jaisen Sanchez, an […]
