VIDEO: Radford at Pearl City (playoff)

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2014

The Radford Rams needed a win over regular-season, second-place finisher Pearl City to reach the playoff finals. A win would also have vaulted the Rams into the state tournament. Instead, Jordan Taamu threw for five TDs as Pearl City rallied for a 35-20 win.

VIDEO: Raiders of the Lost Art: Tweaking out

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2014

Back in the day, ‘Iolani’s football field was not so different. The same scorching South Shore sun. The same occasional breeze drifting down from Palolo and Manoa Valleys. But the bleachers were metal. An afternoon game plus those bleachers could fry an okole or two. Down below, between the old tennis courts was the entrance to that field. The famous ice cream vending machine with three doors and choices. (I miss that thing even if I rarely had the money […]

Punahou moves on, Saint Louis looks ahead

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 25, 2014

Punahou’s starters hadn’t seen the field much in the fourth quarter over the Buffanblu’s first six wins this season. Their efficiency routinely powered the Buffanblu to comfortable leads by halftime as Punahou swept through the ILH first-round schedule with relative ease, starting with a 55-7 win over Saint Louis in the league opener on Aug. 29. Friday’s rematch with the Crusaders bore little resemblance to that first meeting and Punahou survived a four-quarter shootout to retain the ILH title. The […]

INSTANT CLASSIC. Saint Louis needed a win over regular-season (first round) winner Punahou to force a championship game. The Crusaders led 13-0, but the Buffanblu rallied for a 35-28 victory, capturing the ILH Division I football title.

Up the end zone tunnel … and on to UCLA

By Nick Abramo on October 25, 2014

About two hours ago, Fred Ulu-Perry Jr. walked off the Aloha Stadium turf and up the north end zone tunnel for the last time as a high school football player. Just before he stepped into the tunnel, his past became his future, like Dorothy opening the door to her colorful new world in the Wizard of Oz. Ulu-Perry will be going to UCLA on a football scholarship this fall and right there to greet him with a hug and a […]

LIVE BLOG: Punahou 35, Saint Louis 28, Final

By Paul Honda on October 24, 2014

First quarter Slight delay here, my apologies. Had to finish writing my story on the first game (‘Iolani beat Damien 34-14). Jason Kaneshiro is doing the game story for this game and Billy Hull is doing the TRENCH WARFARE post on Fred Ulu-Perry. The scoring opened with a pristine 35-yard bullet from Tua Tagovailoa to Drew Kobayashi on a post route, single coverage, to give STL a 7-0 lead. Tagovailoa scored on a 6-yard run, but STL missed the PAT. […]
