VIDEO: Caging Sabers: Governors’ lockdown

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2014

For a long stretch, the Maui Sabers gave Farrington all it could handle. The MIL Division I champions jumped to a 6-0 lead, using a nice scheme in the trenches to create gaps right up the middle. That didn’t last, however. With their big RB, Onosai Emelio, hampered by a late-season knee injury, the Sabers rushing attack was stymied by Farrington — they finished with 120 rushing yards on 42 carries, 2.9 per try. Farrington limited Maui to 209 total […]

Private school pipeline (extended)

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2014

>> The North Shore is often raided for its star athletes, and that’s just part of the subplot in Saturday’s state football semifinal game between No. 1 Punahou and No. 3 Kahuku (Here’s the longer version of this morning’s story in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.) All any parent wants for his or her children is opportunity. The lure of a better life — and happiness — is the driving force for all kinds of life-changing decisions. For many people, it was […]

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2014

Punahou slipped one notch to No. 21 in this week’s CBS MaxPreps Xcellent 25 national football rankings. The Buffanblu (7-0) had a bye last week. St. John Bosco (Calif.), which defeated Saint Louis early in the season, is No. 6 in the rankings. Bishop Gorman (Nev.) is No. 1. Punahou is at No. 22 in the USA Today Super 25 rankings, the same position it held a week ago. Punahou will play Kahuku on Saturday at Aloha Stadium in the […]

D-1 football semifinals have familiar feel

By Billy Hull on November 10, 2014

If you feel like you’ve seen a lot of the teams remaining in the Division I state football playoffs — you have. The same four teams to reach the semifinals in 2012 are back again two years later as Farrington and Mililani meet in the first game on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium, followed by Kahuku and Punahou. After failing to qualify for the state tournament for just the fourth time in 2013, the Red Raiders have reached the semis […]

VIDEO: Kahuku’s Big Red block party

By Paul Honda on November 9, 2014

Defense wins championships? Defense takes a good team to the brink, but somebody’s got to get the ball into the end zone. The Kahuku Red Raiders were spectacular and steady on Friday, limiting Hilo to 37 yards on 30 snaps in the first half. But they trailed 10-0. For most teams, a solution would be a few gadget or trick plays. Perhaps more gambling on defense. Risk. Adverse risk. For Kahuku and coach Lee Leslie, the best option was the […]

VIDEO: Viking Warfare: 3 quarters of a great wall

By Paul Honda on November 9, 2014

In ancient times, the wall of shields — skjaldborg in Old Norse — was a tactically effective means of success in warfare for Vikings. The Wikipedia description: A shield wall was formed by soldiers standing in formation shoulder to shoulder, holding their shields so that they about or overlap. Each man benefits from the protection of his neighbor’s shield, as well as his own. On Friday night, the Hilo Vikings brought their own lockdown wall of defense. Hilo brought defense […]

BIIF drops to 0-16 in state D-I

By Paul Honda on November 9, 2014

Fair weather is a friend to all football coaches. Fickle skies, not so much. What happens when you live in a place that is inundated by precipitation on many a game night? What happens when your team has to be built for torrential rain in a location so moist that switching out leather footballs for rubber ones is an ancient tradition? That’s been the boom-or-bust reality for many a East-side Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion over the decades. In East […]

VIDEO: Hilo vs. #3 Kahuku (state tourney)

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2014

The underdog Vikings of Hilo led 10-3 after three quarters thanks to a tenacious defense, outstanding special teams and efficient offense. Kahuku, however, got 138 yards and two TDs from RB/DT Salanoa-Alo Wily, a 6-1, 270-pound senior, in a 20-10 comeback win in the first round of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division I State Football Championships at Aloha Stadium.
