Eletise’s 41st BCS offer: Roll Tide

By Paul Honda on June 7, 2015

So much for a quiet Sunday morning. Alabama broke the calm of an early, sunny Honolulu morning by making a football scholarship offer to Kaiser junior Michael Eletise. Alabama is now the 41st BCS program to make a scholarship promise to the 6-foot-4, 305-pound offensive lineman. He shared the news on Twitter just before starting the final day of the GPA Maximum Exposure Camp at the University of Hawaii’s Clarence T.C. Ching Field. Nearly 40 colleges and 80 coaches are […]

Maximum Exposure, Day 3

By Paul Honda on June 7, 2015

The final day of the GPA Maximum Exposure Camp is here. Today’s session will end at noon. I got the feeling from organizers that they would’ve loved slightly longer hours on Saturday and today. My No. 1 wish is OL vs. DL 1-on-1s. I hear there will be 1-on-1 pass pro work. Woohoooo! 1:45 p.m. Camp is pau. A lot of great fun watching so many of the state’s top players – and up-and-coming youngsters- in a very competitive environment. […]

Hall pass: Micah Ma’a

By Jerry Campany on June 7, 2015

Punahou never rebuilds, it just reloads with guys like Micah Ma’a. With Hall of Honor recepient Larry Tuileta gone, the Buffanblu boys volleyball team was supposed to come back to the pack a little bit. But everything seemed just the same, if not better, as Punahou cruised to another state crown. A huge part of that seamless transistion was provided by Micah Ma’a, and he will be rewarded for it with induction into the Enterprise / HHSAA Hall of Honor […]

Texas Tech surprise for Kapolei frosh Savea

By Paul Honda on June 6, 2015

Rocky Savea has enough on his mind as a freshman in high school. Running the beach at 6 a.m. Lifting weights. Hitting the books. But his life took a great jolt — in a good way — when Oregon State offered him a scholarship on May 21. Now, Texas Tech is showing more than a little interest in the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Kapolei linebacker. A Red Raiders assistant coach was on campus recently to scout talent. By today, Savea’s father, Toma, […]

Pearl City determined to stay gripped near top

By Nick Abramo on June 6, 2015

EIGHTH IN A SERIES ON SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICES ON OAHU Two seasons ago, in Robin Kami’s first game as the Pearl City football head coach, the Chargers got rolled 42-7 by Kapolei. It was a bleak beginning, but things worked out and Pearl City eventually finished second in the OIA Division II tournament. Beginner’s luck? No. Kami proved his positive impact on the Chargers’ program again in 2014, when his team nearly won the league D-II crown but lost a […]

Humble Herbig lands offers from UH, UNLV

By Paul Honda on June 6, 2015

It’s taken some time for recruiters to take notice, but Nate Herbig seems to be on a roll now. The 6-foot-4, 320-pound Saint Louis junior received football scholarship offers from Hawaii and UNLV today as he plowed opponents during run-blocking challenges at the GPA Maximum Exposure Camp at Clarence T.C. Ching Field. Roughly 80 coaches from nearly 40 colleges are present at the event on the UH campus. “I did well today,” he texted on Saturday night after a scorching-hot, […]

Maximum Exposure, Day 2

By Paul Honda on June 6, 2015

The 400 plus players here at UH endured temperatures near 90 degrees this morning on the second day of the GPA Maximum Exposure Camp. Lunch break lasted until 2 p.m., wisely so. 2:35 p.m. The last 30 minutes were all about special teams, particularly gunners and punt return blocking. No linemen. Guest speaker from Towson State now up. Last night’s speakers included former UH player Keith Bhonapha, who is now a coach at Washington State. Spoke eloquently about the special […]
