Football season will stay a little bit more like football season. A proposal that would have allowed high school football teams to start one week earlier — from July 20 to July 13 — took a wild ride through Hawaii’s athletic directors and decision makers this week at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. It had some life and momentum on Tuesday, when it passed a Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association committee with a 22-6 vote with seven abstaining. The measure was […]
Mililani running back Vavae Malepeai left for an unofficial football visit to Oregon on Wednesday night. The Ducks are at the top of his pecking order — out of the 18 FBS Division I schools that have offered him scholarships — and he told OregonLive.com earlier this week that he’s 50-50 on giving his oral commitment there. Those coin-flip odds are just that. He has three other schools he’s interested in, according to his mom, Tali Malepeai, who spoke with […]
Kamehameha-Hawaii guard Russel Montibon has received a scholarship offer from Army, according to Warriors coach Dan Lyons. Montibon, who also goes by the first name of Kelii, is a 6-foot-2, 277-pound senior-to-be.
The reigning Star-Advertiser All-State offensive player of the year is a wanted man. McKenzie Milton, first sought after by the University of Hawaii, now has scholarship offers from all three football-playing service academies: Navy, Army, and now, Air Force. He tweeted the news on Wednesday. McKenzie Milton @McChickenzie Jun 10 Blessed to be given the great opportunities to further my education at all three service academy schools Mililani ran and threw roughshod on foes in 2014, emerging as the Division […]

This is an extended version of a story about former Oklahoma and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Brian Bosworth that ran in the Wednesday edition of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Brian Bosworth was an electric football player with a flamboyant personality and a colorful haircut to match. The emphasis of the last sentence is on “was.” As “The Boz,” Bosworth was a consensus All-American at Oklahoma in 1985 and ’86, but to some, he was a consensus nutcase who called attention to himself, […]
Mililani running back Vavae Malepeai told OregonLive.com that he is “50-50” on committing to Oregon. Malepeai, who helped the Trojans to the Division I state championship a year ago, is scheduled to visit the Oregon campus this weekend. The 6-foot, 190-pound senior-to-be is a Honolulu Star-Advertiser two-time first-team All-State selection. Malepeai rushed for more than 1,000 yards the past two seasons, and he scored 23 touchdowns as a junior. Eighteen FBS Division I schools have offered Malepeai a scholarship, including […]
