Tokuda and York: potential high for Mules’ Muti

By Nick Abramo on August 3, 2015

Sometimes one thing leads to another. When reached Monday night for a report on the team’s canceled practice, Leilehua football coach Nolan Tokuda answered questions about how some of his players and coaches were affected by the mandatory evacuations enforced by firefighters due to the wildfire near Wahiawa. Eventually, the subject changed to football and that’s when Tokuda let us know about one of his players that we would be wise to watch out for. He was talking about 6-foot-4, […]

Leilehua cancels practice due to wildfire smoke

By Nick Abramo on August 3, 2015

The smoke from the wildfire near Wahiawa was so bad Monday that the Leilehua football team canceled its practice. Mules head coach Nolan Tokuda said some of his coaches and players had to leave their homes when firefighters enforced a mandatory evacuation of about 100 homes. The evacuation order was eventually lifted Monday night. “We lost a day of preparation,” Tokuda said, “but safety is always first.” Leilehua, which played a scrimmage against Mililani on Thursday, is getting ready for […]

Govs football fans will see home games in ’16

By Nick Abramo on August 2, 2015

There’s a lot of out with the old and in with the new at Farrington. While being interviewed by Hawaii Prep World last Tuesday, Governors football coach Randall Okimoto was standing near the school’s rundown weight room, which sits under the bleachers of the school’s pool. A pickup truck was about 30 feet away, loaded with trash that came from a retired physical education teacher’s office. Students’ health notebooks from previous years, a broken down bookcase, one old Nike sneaker, […]

Hao says Tagovailoa is best of Passas’ bunch

By Nick Abramo on August 2, 2015

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Hawaii Prep World sportswriters were at least a little surprised early last season when Saint Louis coach Cal Lee told one of them that sophomore Tua Tagovailoa was named the starting quarterback to replace incumbent senior starter Ryder Kuhns. Kuhns put up fine numbers (2,016 yards and 25 touchdowns passing) as a junior and was off to a fast start as a senior. In came Tagovailoa, the dual runnning and passing threat, and he went on […]

Rivals Castle and Kailua get to renew series

By Nick Abramo on August 2, 2015

Circumstances fell into place for the Kailua vs. Castle football rivalry this year. The neighboring Windward-side schools did not play last year due to Oahu Interscholastic Association’s decision to move away from the East-West divisional alignment. When this year’s schedule came out, the Knights vs. Surfriders was not listed, either. But, things have changed since the original schedule was made and Castle visits Kailua on Friday at 7:30 p.m. for a regular-season nonleague game. Originally, Castle was scheduled to play […]
