Harold Tanaka, the OIA football coordinator, and Anuenue coach Keli‘i Pio Adams confirmed it. “We’re trying to be optimistic,” Adams said. “We have 23 players and six have been injured since the St. Francis game (a 62-0 loss last Friday. Cal Lee, Rod York debriefed after scrimmage

By Nick Abramo on August 12, 2015

It was just an initial, relatively insignificant skirmish in what could be the beginning of the road to the real war. We’re talking about Cal Lee’s Saint Louis Crusaders against Rod York’s Mililani Trojans. The battle lines have been drawn, but there is no assurance that either of these two teams will hold up in the long run of very difficult schedules. But — as the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 media poll voters have told us the last two weeks — Mililani […]

St. Francis’ Johnston piles up the points

By Nick Abramo on August 11, 2015

St. Francis senior Chenoa Johnston sent six extra-point kicks out of eight attempts through the uprights last Friday in a 62-0 win over Anuenue in a nonleague, regular-season opener for both teams. Scoring points is not unusual for Johnston, who lost count after 18 extra points last season as a junior for the Saints. But, the fact that she, yes, she, kicked six of them in one game in a sport mostly reserved for boys, is noteworthy. Since 1994, there […]

The news was also reported on BigIslandNow.com on Tuesday. Head coach David Baldwin was placed on indefinite leave Monday for an undisclosed reason. A call to Baldwin was not returned, and Big Island Interscholastic Federation executive director Lyle Crozier did not know enough about the situation to comment Monday and did not answer […]

Kapolei’s Auwae reveals top 6 college choices

By Billy Hull on August 11, 2015

Apparently it’s decision time for Kapolei’s Toleafoa Sean Auwae. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive lineman narrowed his college choices to six on Tuesday via Twitter and said he will make his decision public on Friday, the same day the Hurricanes host Kahuku for the first time on their home turf to open the OIA regular season. Auwae said his final six college choices (in no order) are UCLA, Texas Tech, Louisville, Vanderbilt, Utah and Oregon State. Auwae narrowed his choices from […]

Upgrade in grades shows at Kahuku

By Nick Abramo on August 10, 2015

New Kahuku football head coach Vavae Tata and former head coach Lee Leslie have more than their experience with the Red Raiders in common. Both men are dedicated to the full package of the word student-athlete. No good grades, no play. And big strides have been made at the school in this area, not just in football, but all sports. Yes, the pride of Kahuku, which has always been football, may be starting to shift to academic achievement, too. Poor […]

Hilo football coach placed on leave

By Hawaii Prep World on August 10, 2015

The Hilo Vikings football team is without its head coach. Coach Dave Baldwin is “on leave” while administrators look into a complaint made against him. After a meeting at the school on Monday night, sources say the team will have co-head coaches for Saturday’s game at Punahou, and Baldwin will not be one of them. Athletic Director Kurt Kawachi could not go into detail about the nature of the complaint or who it came from. “As of Wednesday the 5th, […]
