Army offers scholarship to Kahuku’s Sasaoka

By Nick Abramo on August 18, 2015

Kahuku kicker Kekoa Sasaoka has one scholarship offer and two other schools intereested in his services. Army offered Sasaoka in March, and the senior Honolulu Star-Advertiser All-State second team selection is being actively recruited by Hawaii and Cal. The recruiting point man at Army is former Waipahu head coach Sean Saturnio, who is a Black Knights assistant. Sasaoka made the switch from Farrington to Kahuku this season and believes more offers may be coming his way. “My mom has lived […]

Hernandez wants greatness from his ‘D’

By Paul Honda on August 18, 2015

They wanted more. The Kapolei Hurricanes played some stellar defense in the face of Kahuku’s smashmouth attack, but never got anything going offensively until the second half. The good news is that much of the ‘Canes’ difficulties — bad snaps, dropped snaps, dropped passes — are correctible. Not that it softens the sting of defeat, 27-7 at the hands of the then-fourth ranked Red Raiders on Friday night. “Never happy with a loss. I’m never happy with a moral victory.,” […]

Sports to Ponder: ‘Football is fun’

By Nick Abramo on August 18, 2015

Jerry Campany‘s Hawaii Prep World article about Mililani head coach Rod York‘s comment that “football is supposed to be fun” resonated with a lot of people. And the whole point of it — to show that there is a huge disparity between Oahu’s power teams and the so-so teams — was right on. There is ALWAYS talk among fans and some coaches about a so-called superconference, and it is the belief among many in the football community that it would be a […]

Only 27 suited up in Castle’s eye-popping win

By Nick Abramo on August 17, 2015

Yup, there it is. A quick scan down the Castle football roster shows 29 names. Not a lot, but it matches the number head coach Nelson Maeda told Hawaii World that he had on the team after what can be termed as the Knights’ astounding 33-32 victory over then-No. 10 Campbell on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. And, in actuality, Castle (1-1, 1-0 OIA Red) only had 27 players available for the game because two were injured, Maeda said. Maeda didn’t […]

Newspaper photos can be teaching tools

By Nick Abramo on August 17, 2015

Sometimes inspiration comes from places you don’t expect. Take the Farrington football team for instance. The Governors (1-0) had just beaten Waipahu 46-6 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association game Saturday night, and standout running back Challen Faamatau spoke with Hawaii Prep World about this kind of thing. Faamatau had just rushed for 102 yards and added 118 receiving yards. Sure, he was feeling good with his OC-16 player of the game plaque in his hands. But he was all pumped […]

After two weekends of the new high school football season, three teams from the Neighbor Islands check in with 2-0 records — Kapaa and Waimea from the Kauai Interscholastic Federation along with Kamehameha-Hawaii from the Big Island Interscholastic Federation. Two other teams from the Neighbor Islands have not lost, Konawaena (1-0) and Hawaii Prep, both from the BIIF. Ka Makani are the only team of the 16 from the Neighbor Islands that hasn’t played yet. Mililani climbs national ladder to No. 6

By Nick Abramo on August 17, 2015

Mililani moved up one spot to No. 6 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings on Sunday after Saturday’s 73-14 victory over McKinley. The defending Division I state champion Trojans (1-0) were in double digits (No. 18) when the season’s first rankings came out on Aug. 8 and went to No. 7 last week. Ned Freeman, a MaxPreps.com associate, made the computer model for the rankings, which, according to the site, are the result of a collection of “enormous amounts of information […]
