Reviewing the hit that ended Yam’s season

By Nick Abramo on September 16, 2015

Kamehameha’s chances to win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu football title took a huge blow Saturday when sophomore quarterback Thomas Yam‘s season ended with a broken collarbone suffered in the fourth quarter against Saint Louis in the league opener for both teams at Aloha Stadium. Yam had just scored his third rushing touchdown of the game to cut Saint Louis’ lead to 31-27 with 4:30 remaining when he was hit by Saint Louis defender Dylan Toilolo after crossing the goal […]

Kapolei to add brand-new football locker room

By Nick Abramo on September 16, 2015

The deadline had passed, the game story was sent in and it was time to head out of the Kapolei High School field after the Hurricanes rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Campbell 16-7 on Friday night. Ahhh, but there was head coach Darren Hernandez about to sit down and have some postgame grinds with his assistants. “Got a minute?” he was asked. Well, of course, he needed to unwind from a stressful football game anyway and he wasn’t […]

Nanakuli to play final 2 home games at Waianae

By Nick Abramo on September 16, 2015

The defending Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II football champion Nanakuli Golden Hawks will be without a home field for the rest of the season. The original plan was to have the Golden Hawks (4-1, 4-0) play their final two games of the season at home, but work being done on the track surrounding the field won’t be completed in time. Instead, the games against Radford on Oct. 2 and Kalani on Oct. 10 will be considered home games but will […]

Anuenue forfeits sixth straight game

By Nick Abramo on September 16, 2015

Anuenue is still practicing as a football team, but Na Koa has not been playing in any games due to a lack of available players. Oahu Interscholastic Association football coordinator Harold Tanaka said on Wednesday that the team forfeited its sixth straight game, which was scheduled for Friday against Nanakuli at Roosevelt’s Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. After a 62-0 season-opening, nonleague loss to St. Francis, Anuenue’s other forfeits were to Radford, Kaimuki, Kalaheo, Pearl City and Kalani. Na Koa (which will […]

Say prefers OIA’s East/West football alignment

By Nick Abramo on September 16, 2015

Head coach Wendell Say was on his way to the team bus after his Aiea Na Alii football team lost 54-6 to Mililani at John Kauinana Stadium on Saturday. He brought up an interesting point, suggesting in a casual sort of way that the Oahu Interscholastic Association should go back to the East/West alignment for football. The league went to a non-geographical format starting with the 2014 season. There had been a perception that the West teams were a lot […]

Trojans await Govs’ balanced offense Thursday

By Nick Abramo on September 16, 2015

Due to No. 3 Mililani’s potent offense that is averaging 59.2 points in five games, the Trojans’ defense gets a bit overlooked. The biggest question for the unit — after giving up 76 points in a loss to Liberty in Henderson, Nev., two weeks ago — is how will it hold up against Thursday night’s opponent, Oahu Interscholastic Association Blue rival and sixth-ranked Farrington at 7:30 p.m. at Aloha Stadium. Certainly not as imposing as last season’s defense, which included […]

Cal Lee: No softies on the schedule

By Nick Abramo on September 16, 2015

If the Saint Louis-Kamehameha game last weekend is any indication of how the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I football season will go, it’s going to be a rip-roaring campaign. The top-ranked Crusaders (3-0, 1-0) just got by No. 5 Kamehameha, 31-27 on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. Saint Louis head coach Cal Lee was relieved when it was over. “We expected a tough game and that’s what it was,” he said. “We were fortunate to hang on and get the […]

Saint Louis QB Tagovailoa is day-to-day

By Nick Abramo on September 15, 2015

Saint Louis junior quarterback Tua Tagovailoa hurt his calf in Saturday’s 31-27 victory over Kamehameha, according to Crusaders head coach Cal Lee. Tagovailoa missed parts of the game and returned, and Lee said his status is “day-to-day.” “He sprained his calf,” Lee said. “He hasn’t practiced this week, so we’ll see how it goes. We’ll know by Friday. If he’s moving around by then, he’ll play. If not, he’ll have to sit out.” Backup quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, a sophomore, has […]
