GAME NIGHT 8/6: McKinley/Pac-Five

By Hawaii Prep World on August 6, 2016

After a wild opening night in prep football Friday, we have three games scheduled for Saturday on Oahu. The first kicks off at 4 p.m. as the Pac-Five Wolfpack face the McKinley Tigers in the first game of a doubleheader at Aiea. The Wolfpack return senior QB Kainoa Ferreira, who is one of five quarterbacks on Oahu ever to throw for at least 500 yards in a game. The Tigers are looking to bounce back from a winless season last […]

Castle takes ‘a step in the right direction’

By Christian Shimabuku on August 6, 2016

In what head coach Nelson Maeda called a ‘rough’ week of preparation, Castle was able to shrug aside their roster issues in a 38-0 opening-night rout over visiting Kalaheo on Friday night. Last year’s team had as few as 27 players suit up for some games. This year’s squad had a massive upgrade in that aspect with 50 names listed on the roster. However, due to some academic issues and injuries, only 34 were available to play for the Knights […]

Little things lead to big plays for Waianae QB

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 6, 2016

Jaren Ulu showed a willingness to absorb punishment in the pocket throughout No. 8 Waianae’s spectacular second-half duel with No. 4 Kamehameha on Friday night. The Searider quarterback wasn’t shy about delivering a blow either. Before slinging the decisive touchdown pass in Waianae’s breathtaking 26-20 opening-night win at Kamehameha’s Kunuiakea Stadium, Ulu’s turn as a lead blocker helped spark the Searider offense late in the third quarter. Both defenses controlled the action through the game’s first 31 minutes and Waianae […]

Moanalua’s Yuen shakes off early jitters

By Jeremy Nitta on August 6, 2016

Senior quarterback Alakai Yuen was supposed to be the star this season for the Moanalua football team. But early on in the season opener against Damien on Friday night, Yuen struggled. Two of his first four passes were intercepted by the Monarchs, and Yuen was visibly frustrated on the sideline. “He had major jitters, and I was trying to calm him down on the sideline,” first-year Moanalua coach Savai’i Eselu said. “Alakai is a workhorse, and he does such a […]

Kapolei’s intricate routes look very familiar

By Nick Abramo on August 6, 2016

You’ve seen it before. That clockwork offense employed by the University of Hawaii under June Jones. Short routes, medium routes, deep routes. Kill ’em short and then throw a bullet over the middle. Then, when they’re least expecting it, have one receiver go in and one go out and let the defense decide who’s going to take who. Go deep. The quarterback’s arm is loaded and he knows exactly where the receiver is going to be. It took a quarter […]

Amorozo is 4th Waipahu QB to top 300 yards

By Stan Lee on August 6, 2016

Braden Amorozo threw for 316 yards and accounted for two second-half touchdowns to help Waipahu hold off host Nanakuli 20-12 on Friday in the season-opener for both teams. Amorozo completed 22 of 33 passes for the Marauders (1-0). His 3-yard run broke a 6-all tie and Waipahu completed the two-point conversion for a 14-8 lead with 2:30 left in the third quarter. Nanakuli (0-1) closed to 14-12 after Nainoa Banks connected on his second touchdown pass to Joey Vea-Quitog with […]

Kamehameha’s Ma‘afala takes blame for loss

By Billy Hull on August 6, 2016

In every question that Abu Ma’afala answered following his debut as Kamehameha’s football coach, there was a running theme he meant to tell with every other sentence he spoke. “The number one thing we tasked them with going into this was to play hard and play together and they played literally until the last snap,” Ma’afala said after No. 4 Kamehameha’s last-second comeback fell short in a 26-20 loss to No. 8 Waianae. “If there is anyone to blame, blame […]

Punahou’s defense clamps down

By Paul Honda on August 5, 2016

Even without stellar linebacker Seyddrick Lakalaka (foot injury), Punahou’s defensive unit is formidable to say the least. Leilehua’s offense found that out on Friday night. Kona Andres passed for 203 yards, but it was a battle to get downfield in the first half, when the host Mules managed just a field goal. By the break, it was 49-3, and Punahou barely relented in a 70-9 runaway win to start Week 1 of prep football. Andres returned from a mid-game injury […]
