GAME NIGHT 8/20: Kapolei/Leilehua

By Hawaii Prep World on August 20, 2016

Six more games on Oahu scheduled for Saturday including a couple of afternoon tilts involving neighbor island teams. Let’s get to it. The Hurricanes dropped from No. 5 to No. 9 in this week’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 after losing 35-14 to Waianae. The Mules play their third ranked team in as many weeks to start the season, but hey, at least it isn’t No. 1 Kahuku and No. 3 Punahou? History: Leilehua leads the all-time series 7-3 but the […]

GAME NIGHT 8/20: Castle/Mililani

By Hawaii Prep World on August 20, 2016

Six more games on Oahu scheduled for Saturday including a couple of afternoon tilts involving neighbor island teams. Let’s get to it. History: Castle is 2-0 for the first time since 2009, when it won its first three games of the season. Castle leads the all-time series 11-10, but the Trojans have won seven of the last nine. The last meeting was a 37-7 win by Mililani in 2011, but Castle won the previous meeting 28-21 in 2008. Live updates […]

Waianae defense simply taketh away

By Paul Honda on August 20, 2016

Absurd, perhaps, to consider that two mere turnovers against a defense like Waianae’s could mean so much. After all, Moanalua’s Alaka‘i Yuen passed for a respectable 218 yards and connected with Ryan Ramones and Brandon Bender for a total of three touchdown passes. That just doesn’t happen much against a vaunted Searider defense with knockdown artists like Kanai Mauga — the guy with the recent scholarship offers from Oregon State and Hawaii. But yes, Unbeaten, No. 4-ranked Waianae (3-0, 2-0 […]

Rough Riders stymied by turnovers

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 20, 2016

First-year Roosevelt coach Kui Kahooilihala is steadfast in his commitment to the Rough Riders’ ball-control ground game. The problem on Friday was actually keeping control of the football. The Rough Riders lost three fumbles in a 27-0 loss to Pearl City, the first halting their most promising drive of the night and the next two leading to Charger scores. “We have to take care of the ball better offensively,” Kahooilihala said. “That kind of hurt us. That and penalties.” The […]

As expected, Kahuku and Aiea are a tier apart

By Nick Abramo on August 20, 2016

Without intending to do so, Aiea football head coach Wendell Say summed up what is wrong with Hawaii high school football’s competitive balance. It was after Na Alii’s 50-7 loss at Kahuku on Friday night, when he said, “Playing a strong team like this doesn’t define us. What defines us is how we played, and we didn’t quit.” Sure enough, Aiea played well … or at least as well as any team can possibly play in a 43-point loss. Na […]

Resilient Konawaena holds on to beat Saints

By Stan Lee on August 20, 2016

Konawaena didn’t need to be perfect in its season opener. The Wildcats just needed to be resilient. The nerves were expected as the Wildcats opened the season on the road. In a back-and-forth game against St. Francis on Friday, Konawaena rallied and held on for a 23-22 win. “I’m definitely proud of them,” Konawaena coach Brad Uemoto said. “We definitely had some rust coming in. That’s just being the first game and playing a great opponent. And that team is […]

Kalaheo gets “total team effort” in win

By Christian Shimabuku on August 20, 2016

Entering Friday night’s contest at Kailua, both Kalaheo and McKinley were 0-1 in OIA Division II play and 0-2 overall in 2016. Kalaheo was 2-7 in 2015, with one of the wins a forfeit over Anuenue, which no longer has a varsity program. On the other side, McKinley came in losers of 18 straight. Something had to give. What resulted was what Kalaheo head coach Darrell Poole called a “total team effort,” as the Mustangs (1-2, 1-1) grinded out a […]

Chargers come through on third down

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 20, 2016

Pearl City’s production on third down helped power the Chargers’ 27-0 win over Roosevelt in a duel of ball-control offenses on Friday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. The Chargers failed to convert on their first three third-down situations, but went 6-for-9 over the remainder of the game and turned in three of the night’s pivotal plays while facing third-and-long. >> Leading 6-0 lead on two Zameer Khan field goals, the Chargers faced third-and-9 early in the second quarter. Coming out […]
