Elvis travels big red road to end zone

By Paul Honda on August 27, 2016

There were notable aspects of Kahuku’s 28-0 win over No. 4 Waianae up and down the board on Friday night. It was a stellar night on special teams, where the top-ranked Red Raiders consistently set up good field position for their offense. It was certainly a dominant night defensively for coach Vavae Tata‘s squad, shutting out one of the state’s most potent offenses. But it was also a memorable night because Elvis was in the building. Elvis Vakapuna‘s presence coincided […]

Kapolei’s Tagovailoa throws for 403 yards in win

By Christian Shimabuku on August 27, 2016

In an alternate universe, perhaps June Jones would have been opening his second stint as the University of Hawaii’s head coach against California in Sydney, Australia, on Friday night. Instead, Kapolei’s first-year offensive coordinator mentored quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa to victory in Kaneohe, leading the sophomore to another quality performance. Tagovailoa finished 30-for-44 with 403 yards, three passing touchdowns and one interception, executing Jones’ run-and-shoot offense at a high level as the Hurricanes were 40-21 victors at Castle. Tagovailoa recorded his […]

Radford unveils new campus field

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 27, 2016

Radford’s return to John E. Velasco Stadium didn’t end the way the Rams had hoped. Then again, being able to host a game on campus was a bit of a victory unto itself. After losing to Pearl City on Oct. 12, 2013, Radford played its “home” games at Aiea over the next two seasons while the field was renovated. The process was complicated when military debris was uncovered during excavation work to replace the track. The Navy handled the clean-up, […]

Kaufusi another all-purpose threat for Cougars

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 27, 2016

Considering his workload over the previous three hours, Andrew Kaufusi looked remarkably fresh as he headed toward the bus awaiting the Kaiser football team just outside John E. Velasco Stadium on Friday night. Kaufusi didn’t have much downtime in his return from an injury while contributing in all three phases in the Cougars’ 34-7 OIA Blue win over Radford. He scored the game’s first touchdown on a 65-yard reception when Kaiser executed a double pass with Lincoln Lima catching a […]

Kahuku’s pile movers wore out Waianae

By Nick Abramo on August 27, 2016

It’s on to Cleveland … er … Campbell for the Kahuku football team after winning Friday’s big home matchup against Waianae, 28-0. The last sentence was a reference to Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots’ head coach who doesn’t give out a ton of information to the media and repeated multiple times that, “It’s on to Cleveland,” who the Patriots were playing the next weekend, to a reporter inquiring about Belichick’s thoughts after a victory. Like Belichick, Red Raiders head […]
