Faith Lutheran QB makes most of trip

By Paul Honda on September 4, 2016

Leaving the comfortable confines to fly across the Pacific Ocean during hurricane season requires a leap of faith. No less so when your starting quarterback goes down with an injury three snaps into a game. Reserve Sagan Gronauer was prepared, passing for 210 yards and a touchdown, and running for another TD as Faith Lutheran (Las Vegas) overwhelmed Kaimuki 49-18 on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. The Crusaders (1-1) arrived in the islands ranked 18th in Nevada by MaxPreps. They’ll leave […]

Nihipali-Botelho stokes Kahuku’s fire

By Nick Abramo on September 3, 2016

Stokes Nihipali-Botelho has been making big plays in the limelight for the top-ranked Kahuku Red Raiders for two seasons now. It’s a wonder opposing quarterbacks even throw in his direction. The defensive back, it seems, comes up with at least one interception per game. Sometimes two. He had two picks in the Red Raiders’ 44-0 home victory over Campbell on Friday night, and he also had a ton of return yardage. And, let’s not forget, he kicked all six of […]

Ka‘u rallies for win in 8-man FB opener

By Nick Abramo on September 3, 2016

Ka‘u defeated Pahoa 26-18 to open the Big Island Interscholastic Federation 8-man football season on Aug. 27. Kainalu Medeiros-Dancel scored on an 82-yard kickoff return to help the Trojans rally back from an 18-12 deficit at Pahoa, according to sportswriter Matt Gerhart in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald. Medeiros-Dancel also made a game-saving interception with less than two minutes remaining. Ka‘u won the inaugural BIIF 8-man championship in 2014 and are trying to wrest control of that title again in 2016 after […]

The ‘W’ matters to Waianae, not records

By Paul Honda on September 3, 2016

It was a gritty effort by the small band of Kaiser Cougars, but the Waianae Seariders were back to playing physical, ground-and-pound football on Friday night. It started with an opportunistic defense — Tytyn Kahooilihala‘s fumble recovery in the end zone just two snaps into the contest — and kept rolling with a bulldozing ground attack. It was fitting, in many ways, that Waianae’s leading rusher stopped short of breaking a school record. Rico Rosario piled up 190 yards on […]

Crusaders march toward showdown

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 3, 2016

Saint Louis did a whole lot right in a commanding victory to open its ILH schedule Friday night. Walking toward Aloha Stadium’s north tunnel, Cal Lee’s initial thoughts gravitated to areas of improvement following the Crusaders’ 49-7 win over ‘Iolani at Aloha Stadium. “I’ve gotta look at the film and everything but I can still see a lot of dropped passes, fumbles, all of that kind of stuff,” Lee said. Lee’s focus on honing the Crusaders’ execution is in keeping […]

Lagazo quarterbacks Kailua to a win

By Stan Lee on September 3, 2016

Playing in his new position, Mark Lagazo threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two more to lead Kailua to a 34-21 win at Nanakuli on Friday. A running back/linebacker, Lagazo became the quarterback when Keoni Serikawa went down with an injury against Farrington on Aug. 20. Lagazo completed five of seven passes against the Golden Hawks in his first start at QB, but two of those were for touchdowns in the first quarter. “It’s a big step up,” said […]
