Banks takes aim at Nanakuli passing mark

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 24, 2016

Nanakuli coach Keala Watson put the ball in Nainoa Banks’ hands on Friday and the senior quarterback delivered the second highest passing total in school history. The Golden Hawks broke away from their ground-based attack and gave Banks an opportunity to fling the ball around Castle’s field in their penultimate game of the OIA Red schedule. Banks completed 26 of 48 attempts and made a run at the school record he set last season in throwing for 325 yards and […]

Saints break from script for classic finish

By Paul Honda on September 24, 2016

From chapter one, the events unfolded like an old-fashioned mystery novel. The predominant favorite, first-place Damien, airing the football out from the start. The other faction, underdog St. Francis, refusing to conform. Battering ram. Patient. Eschewing this newfangled “forward pass” possibly because, as the great gridiron fundamentalist preacher Dick Tomey often said to the masses via the social media of the mid-1970s (television), “Three things happen when you pass the football, and two of them are bad.” Those words echoed […]

Kailua shows Wong heart

By Brian McInnis on September 24, 2016

There were plenty of fine victories for the Kailua Surfriders last year, as they went 7-3 to mark a complete turnaround from the winless year before. But what happened Friday night at Alex Kane Stadium was special for an altogether different reason for coach Joseph Wong. Kailua staged an improbable rally from down 21 points to stun No. 7 Mililani 34-28, keeping the Surfriders (3-3) right in the mix of the OIA Red standings with one game to play, vs. […]

The Corner Men: Building Punahou’s Trust

By Paul Honda on September 24, 2016

Maybe it’s just a gut feeling. Maybe it’s true. Until we have the actual numbers on paper, maybe it’s just the imagination of a crusty old sportswriter. But this is what it seems to be: No offense in the state is willing to send receivers to all four corners of the terrain to haul in long, beautifully launched, spiraled footballs. That was the case on Friday night at Aloha Stadium, when Punahou quarterback Nick Kapule sent his football to places […]
