GAME NIGHT 10/28: Waipahu/Waialua

By Hawaii Prep World on October 28, 2016

It’s title night in the OIA at Aloha Stadium with the Division I and Division II OIA championship games taking place. The Division II battle features 2006 and ’11 OIA D-II champion Waipahu (8-1) against Waialua (6-2), which is looking to end a 61-year title drought. The Marauders avenged their only loss of the season with a 13-7 win over Pearl City last weekend in the semifinals. Waipahu is the only team on Oahu with a 1,000-yard passer (Braden Amorozo) […]

North Shore unites at Aloha Stadium

By Nick Abramo on October 28, 2016

Right now, the Waialua Bulldogs are playing for their first football league championship since 1955 and it doesn’t hurt to have the whole North Shore on your side. A little magic blessing from Kahuku, the defending Division I state football champions from the Eastern end, can’t hurt. Well, Waialua — from the Western end of the North Shore — just happens to be on the Mauka sideline at Aloha Stadium for its Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II title game against […]

Nerdpod: Running backs v3.0

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2016

NERDPOD: Running backs v3.0 The Star-Advertiser and Hawaii Prep World’s Paul Honda breaks down some of the best running backs in the state. Wow. Wowowow. They come at Challen Faamatau in all kinds of ways, none of them friendly. Chisel, blast, avalanche. Whatever it takes, defenses will come at Farrington Governor #13, and he has paid the price. Yet, he never stays down for long. He gets back up and keeps answering the call. Today, we take a look at […]

Waialua could end 61-year league title drought

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2016

Few places on Oahu have gone unchanged over the decades. Waialua remains as vibrant and serene as ever, in its quiet, understated way. Lifetime residents — and coaches — would have it no other way. When the Waialua Bulldogs face Waipahu on Friday night for the OIA Division II football championship, they’ll be chasing history. Waialua placed first the OIA Blue in 1992 when the league had Red, White and Blue Conferences. There were no conference playoffs. Instead, the top […]

Friday night at Aloha Stadium, No. 1 Kahuku and No. 4 Farrington will meet for the fourth time in an OIA football championship game. Kahuku has won all three meetings by a combined score of 66-26. The 2008 game was a classic with St. John Lessary III kicking the game-winning field goal in sudden death overtime to give the Red Raiders a 22-19 victory. Here is every OIA championship game that has been played. Prior to 1970 there were no […]

Last (seeded) and Furious: Baldwin fans irate

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2016

Silent but furious. According to longtime Maui News sportswriter Robert Collias, that’s the state of most Baldwin football fans — and island media — this week since learning that their team is the lowest seed — fourth — when the HHSAA Division I State Championships kick off Nov. 4. The Bears won the Maui Interscholastic League D-I title, but found themselves parked behind top seed Hilo, Campbell and ‘Iolani when the seedings were released on Monday. Irked? Some fans were. […]

By Hawaii Prep World on October 27, 2016

Kahuku senior Kekaula Kaniho is the second Red Raider this season named a USA Today Top Star. Kaniho won a fan vote against 10 other players across the nation to win the award this week, joining teammate Stokes Nihipali-Botelho, who won it earlier this year. Kaniho has returned interceptions for touchdowns in three of Kahuku’s last four games. The top-ranked Red Raiders have scored 11 total touchdowns on defense this season, shut out six opponents, and allowed only one TD […]

Q&A: Farrington coach Randall Okimoto

By Paul Honda on October 26, 2016

Farrington football coach Randall Okimoto took time from his busy schedule for a Q&A with Hawaii Prep World. The Governors will meet No. 1 Kahuku for the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I championship on Friday at Aloha Stadium. They upset then-No. 4 Kapolei 33-27 on Saturday. HPW: How is everyone, including staff, feeling physically and emotionally after Saturday’s win over Kapolei? Okimoto: Our feeling as a whole as a team is of joy. After the win, we agreed that we […]
