Radford’s Garrison makes (hoops) coach proud

By Nick Abramo on August 26, 2017

The basketball coach in the press box watching the football game couldn’t contain himself. You see, coaches aren’t all about winning and nothing else. They also love to see their student-athletes spread their wings. So, when Radford hoops coach Travis Armstrong saw one of his players, Robert Garrison, enter Friday’s football game against Aiea, he told his colleagues right away: “There he is. No. 35. The big guy.” At that point, Garrison was lined up as a defensive end. Later […]

OIA rivals Aiea and Radford are in ‘same league’

By Nick Abramo on August 26, 2017

The two schools are 2.5 miles apart and show quite similar numbers on the Hawaii high school football Richter scale. In other words, Aiea and Radford are in the same league — literally and figuratively. Yes, they play against each other in the Oahu Interscholastic Association, but they are also comparable in the size and scope of their football programs. Yet another way to put it: They belong on the same field and should probably be in the middle tier […]

Seariders protected their house

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 26, 2017

The final numbers in Friday night’s westside matchup between Waianae and Campbell tilted heavily in favor of the visitors from Ewa Beach. Except where it mattered most. Campbell generated 306 yards in total offense in the OIA Blue contest at Waianae’s Raymond Torii Field while the Seariders managed 141, including just two in the first half. The Sabers moved the sticks for 18 first downs to Waianae’s seven with quarterback Krenston Kaipo, the division’s leading passer, throwing for 234 yards […]

Warp speed helps Punahou wear down Torrey Pines

By Paul Honda on August 25, 2017

It started with a long trip to the islands. Then came a luau, followed a day later by a Hawaiian-style pig roast (imu-style). In all, four sunny days on the North Shore leading up to a big game against Punahou. It was a perfect Hawaiian vacation for the Torrey Pines Falcons, defending champions of the CIF’s Avocado League (San Diego Section). Ranked No. 8 by San Diego Prep Insider, they’re a team that never stops training year-round, going virtually non-stop […]

Failauga’s run at record stalled by injury

By Christian Shimabuku on August 25, 2017

Take a look at the state’s top seven rushers of all-time and you’ll notice that not a single one of them carried the ball for the varsity team during their freshman seasons. That’s why Waipahu sophomore Alfred Failauga has a huge advantage over those listed greats. As a freshman last fall, he racked up 1,259 yards on the ground for the Marauders and he’s on pace to shatter the record of Mililani’s Vavae Malepeai, who rushed for 4,549 yards over […]

By Billy Hull on August 25, 2017

No. 6 Kamehameha has passed all of its early-season tests heading into ILH play. The Warriors handled a traditional OIA power in Farrington, 34-15, to start the season. They then headed to Maui and wore out defending Division II champion Lahainaluna in a 33-10 victory. Friday night in their only game of the season at Kunuiakea Stadium, the Warriors defended home turf successfully with another impressive showing — a 33-10 win over Carson (Calif.). Senior quarterback Thomas Yam threw for 262 […]

Pearl City runs over Waialua for 3rd straight win

By Kyle Sakamoto on August 25, 2017

Pearl City’s offense was in quick-strike mode and its defense was in shutdown mode Friday against Waialua. Makoa Cooper rushed seven times for 140 yards and four touchdowns in the first quarter and the Chargers’ defense held the visiting Bulldogs to minus-15 yards of total offense in a 64-0 rout. Pearl City (3-1, 3-0 OIA Division II) put up 36 points in the first quarter with five touchdowns coming on only 14 offensive plays. “We played good, but Waialua made […]
