By Paul Honda on September 5, 2017

The new Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 is out, and again, the back half of my ballot is mostly an entirely different hand of cards. As always, consider this to be as vital to your nutritional health as a dollop of whipped cream or mayonnaise. Pupule FB ballot 9/4/17 1. Saint Louis 2. Kahuku 3. Punahou 4. Mililani 5. Hilo 6. Kapaa 7. Kamehameha 8. Farrington 9. Lahainaluna 10. Damien We can all agree to disagree. I’m not going to argue […]

Q&A: Kahuku DL Samson Reed

By Paul Honda on September 5, 2017

He works constantly in the classroom, the weight room and the gridiron, but Samson Reed saves the intensity for battle. In the classroom, Reed has a 3.6 grade-point average. On the field, he is a defensive lineman who is a big key to Kahuku’s 4-0 start and top-25 national ranking. Here is the Q&A by Reed, who was the prep feature in today’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The Hilo Vikings, who are averaging 59.0 points per game in their first three wins, earned their highest ranking ever checking in at No. 7 in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 released today. The Vikings shut out Honokaa 41-0 on Friday behind another great outing from star running back Kahale Huddleston, who has scored 14 touchdowns in three games. Two-time defending OIA champion Kahuku remained at No. 23 in the latest MaxPreps Xcellent 25 high school football rankings released Monday. The Red Raiders (4-0), who have outscored their first four opponents 152-13, head to Las Vegas this week to play No. 16 Bingham (Utah) in the Polynesian Football Classic at Sam Boyd Stadium on Saturday. This is the first game for Kahuku against a nationally top-25 ranked teams since a 35-7 loss to No. 1 Bishop Gorman last September. […]

Leilehua no longer ordinary in OIA Red

By Christian Shimabuku on September 3, 2017

Leilehua coach Mark Kurisu is a believer in the bigger picture, those small decisions and actions that have a cumulative impact on his program. It’s why he holds his players to higher standards in the classroom, for example. He believes that it will help his players respond to adversity on the field. He was seen saying “trust the process” to players, coaches and parents after the Mules’ 20-19 comeback victory over No. 8 Kapolei in overtime on Saturday night, and […]

Waianae’s Rosario stands alone at the top

By Billy Hull on September 3, 2017

Rico Rosario stands alone at the top of Waianae’s long list of powerful running backs through the years. The 5-foot-8 senior broke West Keliikipi‘s single-game rushing record that stood for 20 years with a 243-yard performance in a 43-20 win over Moanalua on Saturday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. Rosario, who nearly left for Liberty High in Nevada in the offseason, opted to stay on the West side for his senior year of high school. It has been a tough […]

11 years and 17 losses later, Damien topples ‘Iolani

By Paul Honda on September 3, 2017

Legacy is a loaded word, to be sure. For Marcus Faufata-Pedrina, the poise that makes him a leader on and off the football field shouldn’t be mistaken for indifference or passivity. On the contrary, he’s been at the controls as a field general for Damien’s back-to-back ILH football titles in Division II. And as of Saturday, he was at the wheel as the Monarchs ended a 17-game losing streak to ‘Iolani. Damien’s 35-21 win at Skippa Diaz Stadium left the […]

Waialua’s Hatchie embraces peaks and valleys

By Paul Honda on September 3, 2017

Kalani handled its business and Waialua is smiling through the tears. The Falcons’ 33-0 win over the defending OIA Division II champions on Saturday at Skippa Diaz Stadium wasn’t surprising, not with a Bulldogs squad that is young and lacking the girth and physicality of recent seasons. But with a string of lopsided losses, the rest of the prep football galaxy is realizing what the ‘Dogs knew long ago: the road to last year’s championship is one less travelled. For […]
