Mililani’s Gabriel shakes off gaudy numbers

By Christian Shimabuku on September 30, 2017

Miliani quarterback Dillon Gabriel was masterful on Saturday night, shredding Kailua for 431 yards on 19 for 32 passing and five touchdowns in a 52-0 rout. The performance put him in a tie for the second most amount of yards in a game in school history, with former Trojan star and current Central Florida signal-caller McKenzie Milton. It also put his career total over the 5,000-yard mark — 5,069 to be exact. He is already over 2,000 yards this season. […]

Now that the regular-season is done, the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I football playoff matchups are set. On Saturday, Mililani defeated Kailua 52-0 in the regular-season finale. With the loss, the Surfriders (3-4) fell into a three-way tie for fourth place in the OIA Red with Kapolei and Castle. The three teams were equal in head-to-head regular-season matchups and against common opponents. The third tiebreaker — quality wins in division or crossover games — eventually broke the tie before the […]

Martinez steps down at Kaiser

By Billy Hull on September 30, 2017

Arnold Martinez informed school officials today that he is stepping down as Kaiser football coach. The Cougars forfeited all but one of their games this season due to low turnout. They were going to play their homecoming game against Moanalua on Sept. 22 before an altercation at the school four days earlier resulted in principal Justin Mew announcing they were canceling the rest of the season. Martinez, who went 51-51-1 in 11 seasons at Moanalua from 2003-13, was the fifth […]

No. 2 Kahuku is still king in OIA Blue

By Nick Abramo on September 30, 2017

In six games against Hawaii oppoents, the Kahuku defense has given up just two touchdowns — one against Aiea and one against Moanalua. Other than that, it’s all zeros for the four other Hawaii offenses the Red Raiders’ defense has faced, including No. 7 Campbell on Friday night. Although the Sabers did score points on Kahuku in the Red Raiders’ 45-6 victory, it was Campbell’s defense that put the points on the board against Kahuku’s offense. “Our defense played well […]

Purcell: “We took (giving up 50) personally.”

By Billy Hull on September 30, 2017

There wasn’t anything pretty about No. 1 Saint Louis’ 23-12 victory over No. 5 Kamehameha on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. And it suited Saint Louis linebacker Noa Purcell just fine. Six days after the Crusaders won a shootout, 56-50, over Narbonne (Calif.), the offense was bottled up for much of the game by a bend-but-don’t-break Kamehameha defense. The Warriors gave up 376 passing yards to Saint Louis quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, but forced three turnovers, including one in the red […]
