Pupule ballot: Voters raise Waipahu’s black flag

By Paul Honda on October 18, 2017

The Black Flag is waving on the castle of Star-Advertiser Football Top 10, and that means another team has been bumped out. Unless there has been a tie. Waipahu, Damien, Lahainaluna, all worthy teams this season and especially for Damien in recent years, and Lahainaluna over the course of decades, that have been overlooked due to Division II designation/choice. I lamented almost endlessly last week about Damien’s strategic approach and defeat, and whatever the case, voters penalized the Monarchs by […]

‘Iolani’s Genovia will miss state tournament

By Billy Hull on October 18, 2017

Last Friday at Kozuki Stadium, ‘Iolani slotback Justin Genovia joined a special group. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound senior caught a 7-yard pass over the middle against St. Francis to make him the ninth player ever on Oahu to record 2,000 career receiving yards. That accomplishment was quickly overshadowed when Genovia struggled to get up after taking a hit in the middle of the field. Genovia, the Raiders’ leading receiver this season with 869 yards and seven touchdowns on 83 receptions, suffered […]

Kamehameha (4-4) would have to beat Saint Louis twice to end the Crusaders’ season. […]

Waianae faces ‘big task’ against Mililani

By Nick Abramo on October 15, 2017

Waianae coach Walter Young called it a “big task” when told his team would be playing Mililani in the Oahu Interscholastic Association semifinals on Friday at Aloha Stadium. And it is a tall task. No. 3 Mililani (9-0) is humming on all cylinders and no defense has given them a tough rub yet. That’s where Waianae’s defense comes in, possibly. The seventh-ranked Seariders’ unit on that side of the ball will have to play well if they are to have […]

‘Iolani clinches spot in D-II states

By Nick Abramo on October 15, 2017

‘Iolani dropped its final Interscholastic League of Honolulu contest Friday, but still clinched a berth in the state Division II playoffs. The Raiders lost a 49-13 game to St. Francis at home Friday and fell to 4-5 overall. It was a virtual playoff game that the league calls its second round of the regular season. The Saints move on to play Damien (a 30-20 winner over Pac-Five) in the ILH D-II championship game next week and a spot in the […]
