Freshman kicker delivers Waipahu an OIA title

By Christian Shimabuku on October 27, 2017

Quarterbacks dream about the scenario. Coaches scheme for it and kickers dread it until it’s over. Everything Waipahu had worked for since March presented itself when the Marauders recovered a Pearl City fumble on the Chargers’ 41-yard line with under five minutes remaining in the OIA Division II championship game at Aloha Stadium on Thursday night. Down by six points, Waipahu quarterback Braden Amorozo seized the moment, delivering a 33-yard dime to Isaac Yamashita that set up a 3-yard rushing […]

Year after year, the Pearl City Chargers play some of the most consistently successful football in the state. Much of that rooted in the expectations of Robin Kami and his staff. Coach Kami chatted with Hawaii Prep World on Wednesday. Robin Kami Pearl City football Q&A HPW: A year ago, […]

Q&A: Waipahu football coach Bryson Carvalho

By Paul Honda on October 26, 2017

The Waipahu Marauders have been there before. When Bryson Carvalho was an assistant (and JV) coach Bryson Carvalho, the program won the OIA Division II football title. Waipahu football took the OIA D-II titles in 2006 under Sean Saturnio and in ’11 under Eric Keola. The Marauders (9-0) enter tonight’s OIA title game with Pearl City (7-2) in an ultimate winner-take-all: a championship and the lone state-tournament berth. Coach Carvalho chatted with Hawaii Prep World on Wednesday. Bryson Carvalho Waipahu […]

Kahuku football featured by Sports Illustrated

By Nick Abramo on October 25, 2017

The Kahuku football team is prominently featured in a Sports Illustrated story on si.com. An in-depth story, written by Austin Murphy, was posted on SI.com Wednesday and can be read here. Murphy calls the Kahuku football program “the most interesting, exotic, surprising football program in the U.S.” And he proclaims it with apologies to Texas, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania. There are quotes from Red Raiders head coach Makoa Freitas, assistants Sola Soliai and Faasea Mailo as well as from former […]

Kahuku rules the running clock

By Jerry Campany on October 24, 2017

Football coordinator Richard Townsend and the others who ruled the OIA in 1999 probably could never have imagined a machine like the current Kahuku program. Kahuku’s success has turned the mercy rule into the norm rather than the exception. Since it was instituted by Townsend and the OIA in the 1999 season, there have been 32 playoffs games that ended under a running clock. Half of them occurred from 1999-2014 and the other half have happened in the last three […]
