Q&A: Waipahu senior QB Braden Amorozo

By Paul Honda on October 31, 2017

There’s hardly a thing given freely in football, so Braden Amorozo dives deep into the well of knowledge. He studies. Like his favorite athlete, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Amorozo might study defenses morning, afternoon and night. But overcoming adversity? That doesn’t really derive from video study or any other cerebral journey. Down 15 points against Pearl City in the OIA Division II championship game, Amorozo’s Waipahu Marauders were in dire straits. “We knew nothing would be easy, but […]

Gap widens ahead of OIA title game

By Billy Hull on October 30, 2017

There were no changes in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser football rankings this week. Waipahu remained at No. 9 after holding off a pesky Pearl City squad, 23-22, in the OIA Division II championship game last Thursday. In the only other game played last week, Damien held off St. Francis, 13-12, to win the ILH Division II championship. The Monarchs, who earlier this season were ranked in the top 10 of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser poll for the first time ever, earned […]

Winners of 13 consecutive games overall, the Crusaders (8-0) are eighth in the West Region. Bingham (Utah), which shut out Kahuku 17-0 in a game in September that Red Raiders sophomore QB Sol-Jay Maiava did not play in, is ranked No. 10. Other notable teams are Mater […]

Damien earns return trip to Kauai

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 27, 2017

Marcus Faufata-Pedrina conceded he’ll probably be a bit sore when he reports for Damien’s customary Saturday practice following a Friday game. But the Monarchs’ day-after workout will be something of a reward in itself for the senior quarterback. “We wanted to practice tomorrow and keep our season going,” Faufata-Pedrina said as his teammates celebrated the Monarchs’ 13-12 win over St. Francis and a third straight ILH Division II championship Friday night at Aloha Stadium. One point was the difference in […]

Heartbreaking loss ends St. Francis’ best season ever

By Christian Shimabuku on October 27, 2017

A stoic Kip Akana walked out of Aloha Stadium after his St. Francis team lost 13-12 to Damien in the ILH Division II championship game on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. It’s the second consecutive year the Saints have ended their season with a one-possession loss to the Monarchs in the ILH final. Akana, in his third year as head coach, headed toward the busses in a stunned silence. It started to set in that the season was over, and […]

GAME NIGHT 10/27: Damien/St. Francis

By Hawaii Prep World on October 27, 2017

The case could easily be made for Damien and St. Francis to be the top rivalry of the 2017 high school football season. The two teams meet tonight at Aloha Stadium for the fourth time to decide the ILH Division II champion and a berth in the Division I state tournament. The Monarchs won the first meeting, 27-20, but lost last Saturday, 15-14, in a game that came down to the final play. Sept. 15: Damien 27, St. Francis 20 […]
