The second game in the Division II semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships pits undefeated OIA champion Waipahu (10-0) against BIIF champion Konawaena (8-2) at Julian Yates Field on the Big Island. This is the first meeting between the two schools. Waipahu is ranked No. 2 in Division II and Konawaena is No. 3 in the latest Cover2 rankings. Random fact: It doesn’t get more balanced on offense than the Marauders this season. TOTAL PLAYS: 519 Pass […]

Q&A: Kahuku football coach Makoa Freitas

By Paul Honda on November 3, 2017

It’s probably unfair to compare Makoa Freitas with Tony Dungy. But so much of Freitas’ demeanor and countenance reminds just about anyone of the influence of Dungy, his former coach during those years with the Indianapolis Colts. There’s a fire and passion, but the gold is in the message. Freitas believes in authenticity, not because he says it, but because he lives it. The first-year Kahuku head coach has led the Red Raiders to a 9-1 mark — 9-0 in […]

Q&A: Campbell football coach Darren Johnson

By Paul Honda on November 3, 2017

There is no beat other than upbeat for Darren Johnson. The first-year Campbell football coach has long-term hopes for the program, a dream of unifying the football community to maximum strength. For Johnson, that means keeping the district’s football talent right there at Campbell. He and his staff are giving future Sabers plenty to enjoy. Campbell (7-4) lost in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I football semifinals at Kahuku, but the two-week swing until Saturday’s third-place matchup with Waianae (at […]

Q&A: Mililani football coach Rod York

By Paul Honda on November 3, 2017

Rod York leaves no stone unturned. He has traveled near and far in his thirst for knowledge, become a human hard drive of offensive theory and, perhaps most impressively, teaches with as much effectiveness as perhaps any coach in the islands. Whether it’s building a top-shelf staff or developing players from the youth level, York has unbeaten Mililani in position to win the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I football crown. All that stands in the way is behemoth Kahuku. York […]

Q&A: Konawaena football coach Brad Uemoto

By Paul Honda on November 3, 2017

Ten games into the 2017 season, the Konawaena Wildcats are in the driver’s seat without being in a bus. Winning the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division II title (and finishing first in the overall standings), after a multitude of key injuries makes this one of the most unlikely of Wildcat football performances in a long history that includes 12 consecutive league titles (1980-91) a generation ago. By reaching the state tourney, Konawaena (8-2) gets home field for tonight’s matchup with […]

Kahuku gets 2nd player invited to Polynesian Bowl

By Billy Hull on November 2, 2017

Kahuku running back Enoch Nawahine, the leading Division I rusher on Oahu this season, has been invited to the 2018 Polynesian Bowl. The 6-foot, 185-pound senior is averaging 7.8 yards on each of his 107 carries, tallying 839 yards and 11 touchdowns in eight games played. He’s also second on the team with 168 receiving yards on nine receptions with a touchdown. Nawahine transferred to Kahuku for his senior season from Punahou, where he rushed for a team-high 415 yards […]

Pupule ballot: Ranking 1 through 45 and more

By Paul Honda on October 31, 2017

It’s a slightly lonely feeling, seeing all these good teams leave the dance. As I mentioned last week, losing eight teams/spots in the state-tournament field from last year’s wild and wooly event — which had 20 teams in three tiers — is a major bummer. In lieu of maximum participation and exhibition bowl matchups, the season (to me) has been cut short, short, short for too many programs. I’m also certain there are a few wrestling and basketball coaches who […]
