During Saint Louis’ streak of 13 consecutive Prep Bowls, 1996 was a rare year. Despite the Crusaders’ continued success, the Star-Bulletin looked to two other ILH schools for its offensive and defensive players of the year. There might not be another season in the history of prep football in Hawaii that had a bigger clear-cut winner of the offensive player of the year award. Saint Louis’ Timmy Chang still holds the record today for most passing yards in a season, finishing with 3,985 yards and 64 touchdowns for the Crusaders to headline the 1999 prep football all-star teams. 1980 is the year ‘Iolani made its Cinderella run to the Prep Bowl, where it tied Waianae 7-7. Seariders quarterback Michael Beazley, who was the offensive player of the year in both newspapers, was 29-1 as the Waianae starter until the tie against the Raiders. The newspapers differed on the defensive player of the year. Waialua won its fourth straight rural OIA championship in 1955, needing a playoff win over Castle after the two teams finished the season with identical 9-1 records. The Bulldogs dominated the league all-star team with six selections. Waipahu quarterback Bob Tokunaga, Waialua fullback Kenneth Souza and Castle utility player Clarence Young were unanimous choices by the Star-Bulletin. The high school football season finally come to an end across the country over the weekend. A state championship in Texas was decided and the GEICO State Champions Bowl Series included Saint Frances Academy in Baltimore rolling Bingham (Utah), 41-3. Bingham had defeated Hawaii runner-up Kahuku, without starting quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava, 17-0 in September. Leilehua was the big winner of the prep football all-star teams with receiver Phillip Ke-a and defensive tackle Junior Tyrell sweeping the top awards from both newspapers.
