Leilehua, Kailua entertain in OT duel

By Brian McInnis on August 11, 2018

Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here? The words of Maximus Decimus Meridius, of Gladiator fame, came to mind as Leilehua and Kailua played to an at-times ugly, at-times brutal, at-times action packed duel at the Surfriders’ Alex Kane Stadium on Friday night. The Mules’ 9-yard touchdown connection between quarterback Max Nichols and receiver Jayzon Ramos was the difference in the 20-14 Leilehua win in overtime, but only after Kailua made a thrilling comeback to tie […]

Sulu returns to help power Damien

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 11, 2018

The last time Aperamo Sulu appeared on a football field, he was being driven out of Vidinha Stadium. The Damien freshman running back suffered a leg injury on the Monarchs’ first play from scrimmage in a state tournament win over Kauai last November and left the stadium in an ambulance. Just over nine months later, Sulu appeared to be back at full strength in his return to action on Friday. He started at running back for the Monarchs and ran […]

Moanalua turns to “plan W” to get ‘W’

By Billy Hull on August 11, 2018

In a game in which Moanalua outgained its opponent 408 total yards to 73, Na Menehune found themselves trailing Castle by two points with less than three minutes to go. And that wasn’t even their biggest worry. Moanalua coach Savai’i Eselu found himself without an available player who had practiced a single rep at quarterback leading up to the season. Starter Nick Au, who threw for 375 yards and four touchdowns, was knocked out of the game after taking a […]

Lack of depth doesn’t hurt Kaimuki

By Jeremy Nitta on August 11, 2018

Just as every team does before a game, the Kaimuki football team lined up next to their opponent on the sideline to sing their alma mater. As they did, one thing became glaringly obvious: the lack of numbers on the Kaimuki roster. “We weren’t really sure what it was going to be like tonight,” Kaimuki coach David Tautofi said. “Especially with us only suiting up 21 guys, we were prepared for it, but it worked out in our favor.” According […]

Lee, Tuitele dissatisfied with TD given up

By Paul Honda on August 10, 2018

The state of the Saint Louis Crusaders requires no address. They simply dominate all three phases. In a 69-6 trouncing of Waianae on Friday night, No. 1 Saint Louis was unstoppable on offense, relentless on defense and owned the field-position battle via special teams. “They’re good. They’re in midseason form,” Waianae coach Walter Young said. Waianae mustered minus-2 yards rushing against a ferocious front seven, but that didn’t bring any smiles to Saint Louis’ veteran coach, Cal Lee, or standout […]

Saint Louis looks like No. 12 team in nation

By Nick Abramo on August 10, 2018

The Saint Louis Crusaders looked very much like the No. 12 team in the nation Friday night. Can they inch up farther than that? There’s plenty of time to try, with the whole season ahead. In a season-opening 69-6 OIA-ILH alliance victory over Waianae at Aloha Stadium, Saint Louis did just about everything right. But not everything, according to coach Cal Lee. “I don’t know about the score, but for the first game, we made some mistakes,” he said. “We’re […]

Kamehameha’s Arias has a night to remember

By Nick Abramo on August 10, 2018

Hoku Arias was all over the place Friday night. He was part of a gnarly defense for the Kamehameha Warriors in a grueling, 21-7 victory over Kapolei in a historic OIA-ILH alliance opener at Aloha Stadium. Arias had three sacks and a tackle for loss —- all in the first half — and then he scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 5:55 left in the fourth quarter to put the Warriors up for good at 14-7. Four plays and […]

By Paul Honda on August 10, 2018

Defense led the way for the Kamehameha Warriors, who had five first-half sacks against Kapolei in a 21-7 victory on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. Hoku Arias, their stellar linebacker, had three of those sacks and added a 2-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to break a 7-all stalemate. It was the Open Division opener for both teams.
