Covered in mud, Waipahu’s Failauga wins it in 2OT

By Christian Shimabuku on October 13, 2018

The field was so muddy at Kailua’s Alex Kane Stadium that Waipahu running back Alfred Failauga had to confirm afterward that it was indeed him who scored the game-winning touchdown in a 12-6 double-overtime victory, spoiling senior night for the Surfriders. Friday night’s battle was a wet and muddy mess, leaving the majority of players from both squads unrecognizable from the press box because of their jerseys getting covered in brown. “We’re feeling pretty great about that one,” Failauga said. […]

Good half not good enough for Kamehameha

By Brian McInnis on October 13, 2018

Things got a little frisky between No. 7 Kamehameha and No. 1 Saint Louis at two points in time on Friday night. The first time was when the Warriors scored just before halftime, cutting the Crusaders’ lead to a touchdown at intermission in the teams’ regular-season finale at Aloha Stadium. The second was when they met in the loading tunnel after shaking hands following what became a 42-7 runaway win by the state’s team to beat. As players made their […]

Pac-Five and Waialua enjoy puddle mania

By Nick Abramo on October 13, 2018

The Aiea football field was a sloppy mess late Friday afternoon, when Waialua and Pac-Five kicked off for their season-ending football game. The rain fluctuated between super hard and light and steady, and the field presented the players with conditions they don’t see often. Huge puddles and some mud. Considering the heaviness of the downpour, the field itself held up really well, even throughout the second game pitting ‘Iolani and Aiea, and it provided many spills and thrills. “That was […]

Kahuku working to get its swag back

By Billy Hull on October 13, 2018

Following its first back-to-back losses in the regular season since 1996, Kahuku held a players-only meeting at the start of the week. “They know that they needed to right the ship,” Kahuku coach Sterling Carvalho said. An 80-yard touchdown pass from Farrington quarterback Chris Afe to super-sophomore Raymond Millare on the third play from scrimmage at Skippa Diaz Stadium on Friday night suggested that might not be the case for the three-time defending OIA champions. It turned out to be […]

Gilman scores twice on defense to lead Punahou

By Paul Honda on October 12, 2018

It’s not often a defensive player scores a touchdown. Or two touchdowns. In a span of 18 seconds. For Alaka‘i Gilman, it was a second quarter to remember. The Punahou safety was in the right place at the right time, returning a fumble 25 yards to paydirt, then turning an interception into a pick-6 form 30 yards out, boosting the lead to 28-0 as No. 2 Punahou overwhelmed Waianae 52-0 on Friday night. Punahou finished regular-season play 6-2 overall, 5-2 […]

Saved by Seariders: A thank-you note

By Paul Honda on October 12, 2018

Bomboocha mahalos to Waianae football players and coaches who literally lifted my car off this massive rock next to Raymond Tori Field after the game. It was almost midnight and the stadium was empty when I began to head home. I got in the car and thought I driving on dirt and sand when my axle hit rock and got lodged. I tried reversing, but the wheel just spun and kicked sand. The rock was stuck between the axle and […]
