CLOSING THE BOOK: Kamehameha Warriors

By Billy Hull on October 23, 2018

The Kamehameha Warriors again came up just short of finishing .500 for the first time under third-year head coach Abu Ma’afala, and the numbers make it pretty clear where they need to get better in order to contend. On defense, Ma’afala has made a huge difference since replacing Doug Cosbie prior to the start of the 2016 season. Kamehameha allowed 30.2 points per game against ILH competition in Cosbie’s final year and 31.2 points per game in Ma’afala’s first year. […]

Lanai shares 8-man title; Baldwin, Maui to play off

By Nick Abramo on October 23, 2018

Lanai has been back in business playing football for five seasons, and now the Pine Lads are champions of the MIL 8-man league. The Pine Lads (5-2, 5-1) defeated Seabury Hall 78-6 at home on Saturday to move into a first-place tie and a share of the league championship with Molokai (6-1, 5-1). No playoffs were scheduled this season for the four-team league. Lanai brought football back in 2014 after dropping it at the end of the 1953 season. The […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Radford Rams

By Jerry Campany on October 22, 2018

The Radford Rams are inching forward one win at a time. The Rams went 2-8 this year, twice as many as they earned in 2017 following a winless season in Lon Passos‘ debut in 2016. The numbers are small, but the feat is large as the last time the Rams improved their win total for three straight years was from 2003-2005 in Fred Salanoa‘s first three years at the helm. They have never done it four years straight and it […]

‘Iolani rises; Hilo, Waipahu enter Top 10

By Billy Hull on October 22, 2018

The top six teams remain the same in this week’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10, but two new faces made the jump into the rankings. No. 1 seed Moanalua and No. 2 seed Leilehua both lost in the OIA Division I playoffs over the weekend, setting the stage for Hilo at No. 9 and Waipahu at No. 10 to re-enter the rankings. The Vikings began the year at No. 10 but fell out of the rankings after getting blown out […]

National football rankings update

By Billy Hull on October 22, 2018

Owners of a 23-game winning streak, the unanimous No. 1-ranked football team in the state of Hawaii for the entire season, the Saint Louis Crusaders, begin postseason play this week with a winner-take-all ILH championship game against Punahou on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. Despite winning the head-to-head matchup against the Buffanblu, 35-28, in the regular season, there is no tiebreaker advantage. The winner of Saturday’s game is the ILH champion and will play in the Open Division state tournament beginning […]

KS-Hawaii’s forfeit and a confusing week for Hilo

By Paul Honda on October 21, 2018

It sounded strange and extreme enough. Not only would Kamehameha-Hawaii forfeit to Hilo in the final regular-season game — a makeup date due to Hurricane Olivia — but would Division II league leader KS-Hawaii have to forfeit its playoff games due to a little-known by-law in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation handbook? Fortunately, for all parties, there will be no further forfeitures. KS-Hawaii did, as first reported by Nick Abramo on Hawaii Prep World, forfeit Friday’s game with D-I Hilo […]

St. Francis withdraws agreement to forfeit whole season

By Nick Abramo on October 21, 2018

After choosing to forfeit its football season for using an ineligible player on Friday, St. Francis on Sunday withdrew that agreement with the ILH. In addition, St. Francis head of school Dr. Casey Asato filed an appeal with the ILH in an effort to get three of its victories back and possibly still qualify for the Division II state tournament. The appeal is based on a rule in the ILH handbook that states a school must forfeit games in which […]
