Q&A: Waipahu senior safety Deacon Kapea

By Paul Honda on November 6, 2018

It takes all 11 players to make a defensive unit this strong. Waipahu does that, and there’s leadership to sustain the kind of success the Marauders have achieved. They have allowed nine points in two playoff games en route to the OIA Division I football championship just one year after taking the D-II title. Deacon Kapea, who grew up playing sports at Village Park, returned from Damien during his sophomore year for a chance to play at the alma mater […]

Remembering Vince Manuwai, King of the Bamboolas

By Jerry Campany on November 4, 2018

Former Farrington lineman Vince Manuwai died today at age 38, leaving behind six children. Manuwai went on to become one of the best offensive linemen in UH history and made it all the way to the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but his legend was forged as one of the kings of the Bamboolas, as Farrington’s offensive line is known. Manuwai was a first-team All-State selection for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin after his senior season, earning honorable mention for the Honolulu […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Farrington Governors

By Jerry Campany on November 4, 2018

The Farrington Governors finished a brutal season 2-10 in 2018, but they benefited from a coin flip by showing marked improvement in the OIA Open playoffs against Campbell. The Open Division was not kind to the Governors, causing them to win their fewest games since 2001 under Davis Pila and lose 10 games for the first time in the program’s long history. It was also the worst season by margin of victory (-16.6) since 1953 under first-year coach Francis Aiwohi, […]

Maui sews up final state tourney berth

Maui defeated Baldwin 29-20 at War Memorial Stadium on Friday night to capture the MIL Division I championship. The teams had split two previous games this season. The Sabers (5-5) won in the first round and the Bears (3-7) triumphed in the second round, leading to Friday’s title game. The Sabers also wrapped up the state’s final state berth. They play No. 9 Hilo at Keaau on Friday in the Division I semifinals. No. 5 Campbell took hold of the […]

Mililani limits Kahuku to lowest output in OIA since 2014

By Paul Honda on November 3, 2018

The roller coaster doesn’t end for the Kahuku Red Raiders. For Mililani, the blend of experimental laboratory and tough-nosed fundamentals continue well into Coach Rod York’s ninth season. Kahuku’s 27-7 loss to Mililani in the OIA Open championship game on Friday night at Aloha Stadium was, in many ways, a sequel to the first meeting between the teams. In their first matchup, Mililani prevailed 38-10 on Kahuku’s homecoming despite muddy terrain and the home team’s 51-game win streak at Carleton […]

Gabriel’s milestone night ends with a title

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 3, 2018

Dillon Gabriel didn’t think much of his performance on Friday night. Chances are the Mililani quarterback was in the minority in his assessment. Gabriel completed 26 of 39 passes for 375 yards and three touchdowns and the Trojans captured the OIA Open Division championship with a 27-7 victory over three-time defending champion Kahuku on Friday at Aloha Stadium. “I didn’t do my part, but luckily we came out with the win,” Gabriel told the Star-Advertiser’s Nick Abramo after the win. […]
