Championship-level defense comes through for Kapaa

By Paul Honda on November 18, 2018

The youth movement at Kapaa — and a 20-12 semifinal win over Kaimuki — wouldn’t happen without supreme senior leadership. Trust, with a capital ‘T’, is a must in Warrior country. Sophomore Heath Rosa‘s interception set up a key TD for Kapaa, opening the lead to eight points. Then, in the final 1:11, Kapaa showed massive amounts of trust in their underclassmen as Kaimuki marched downfield. After a penalty on the home team for tackling a defenseless receiver — Kapaa […]

No structural damage to Paama’s knee

By Paul Honda on November 18, 2018

An X-ray revealed no structural damage to the injured knee of Kaimuki lineman Sama Paama, Bulldogs coach David Tautofi said on Sunday morning. “He’s doing OK. Thank God the X-ray was good,” Tautofi said of Paama, who was able to board the Bulldogs’ 11 p.m. flight back to Oahu from Lihue on Saturday. Kaimuki lost to KIF champion Kapaa on Saturday afternoon, 20-12, in the Division II semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. Paama, who had five […]

Dominant Lahainaluna remains team to beat

By Brian McInnis on November 18, 2018

LAHAINA >> It’s a gem of a view from “The Imu,” looking down Maui’s western flank out at Lanai and Kahoolawe from on high. And it’s a diamond that Lahainaluna seeks to add to its already studded championship crown a week from now. Even when it plays “sloppy” on offense, as coach Garret Tihada described it on Saturday night, the host Lunas showed why they are still the team to beat for anyone in Division II. Kapaa, Saturday’s other First […]

Ogata, Roosevelt ride rough end to stellar season

By Brian McInnis on November 17, 2018

LAHAINA >> Sky Ogata believes wholeheartedly that Roosevelt will be back. Not back to Lahainaluna, necessarily, but back, in general. The Rough Riders’ shifty dual threat quarterback took the best shots a tough, disciplined Lahainaluna defense could dish out, and came back for more in a 48-10 season-ending loss for the OIA champions in the Division II semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships on Saturday evening. He’ll be back for more next season as a senior. “We’re […]

Kaimuki’s ironmen fall in final minute at Kapaa

By Paul Honda on November 17, 2018

LIHUE >> Some interesting historical tidbits courtesy of the Bonecrusher, Billy Hull. >> This was the 11th state tournament appearance for Kaimuki. The Bulldogs have played at eight different venues. Woh. >> Since 1953, Kaimuki and Kapaa met twice. On Sept. 20, 1963, Kaimuki won 26-0 at Isenberg Field. On Sept. 2, 1972, Kaimuki won 28-0 at Honolulu Stadium. Two games and no points scored by the Warriors against the Bulldogs. That changed Saturday afternoon as KIF champion Kapaa ended […]

GAME NIGHT 11/17: Roosevelt/Lahainaluna

By Brian McInnis on November 17, 2018

Lahainaluna 48, Roosevelt 10, FINAL ———- 6:48 p.m.: Special night for Lahainaluna, which notches three special teams TDs, becoming the first team in HHSAA play to do so. 6:46 p.m.: Unfortunate way for Roosevelt’s banner season to end. This shouldn’t take anything away from what was a fantastic year for the Rough Riders, who picked up their first OIA championship. 6:41 p.m.: Roosevelt punts again, but mercifully no Rickard this time. Lahainaluna looks to drain the remaining five minutes of […]

GAME NIGHT 11/17: Kaimuki/Kapaa

By Paul Honda on November 17, 2018

Kapaa 20, Kaimuki 12, FINAL Kapaa takes a knee and that’s the game. The Warriors advance to the D-II championship game and will play the Roosevelt-Lahainaluna winner next week at Aloha Stadium. After the controversial defensive penalty (tackling a defenseless player), two incompletions by Kaimuki. This time, Stetson Telles-Kelekoma picks off the pass on the right side and there’s no penalty. At the end of the play, as he runs all the way to the right to run out the […]

Latu stands out on loaded Crusaders defense

By Christian Shimabuku on November 17, 2018

It may be hard for a player to stand out on a team chock-full of college prospects like Saint Louis, but Kamo’i Latu hasn’t stopped making plays with his team’s season on the line. The No. 9 team in the nation according to MaxPreps has faced do-or-die scenarios in each of its last two games, and the safety ensured the Saints will keep marching. In Friday night’s second semifinal game in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships against Kahuku, […]
