Judd coming along as Kaiser’s QB

By Billy Hull on September 6, 2014

The numbers weren’t pretty. Four-for-15 for 20 yards and three interceptions. Kaiser quarterback Kalawai’a Judd had two weeks to stew over those numbers after Kaiser lost its first game of the season to Waianae, 26-7. With a bye week to prepare for Friday night’s game against Waipahu, Judd used the extra time to study and mentally prepare for the challenges playing quarterback in coach Cameron Higgins‘ hurry-up offense brings. The layoff seemed to help Judd, who looked much more comfortable […]

August featured record performances

By Billy Hull on September 2, 2014

The month of August was about as crazy as any opening month of prep football that I’ve ever seen. It started with the hurricane warning for Iselle that forced the cancellation of the first week of the season. No Father Bray games were played at Aloha Stadium and a slew of great ILH-OIA matchups, including Mililani/Saint Louis, Leilehua/Punahou and Kamehameha/Waianae, were wiped out. Mililani and Saint Louis found a way to get that game played the following week and the […]

Kailua’s schedule doesn’t get easier

By Nick Abramo on September 1, 2014

It was a long, slow, dark and quiet walk back to the locker room for the Kailua Surfriders after Saturday night’s 25-14 football loss to Aiea at their newly renamed Alex Kane Stadium. Nobody said much. All eyes were downcast. Coach Joseph Wong’s head was staring straight down, and he seemed to be blanketed by the darkness and searching for some kind of light. Some players walked even slower than the rest, hobbling along and nursing their minor injuries. The […]

QB is not a worry for Aiea

By Nick Abramo on August 31, 2014

It doesn’t look like Aiea football coach Wendell Say has to worry too much about the quarterback position. He has two players who showed they are capable of leading the offense in Saturday’s 25-14 victory over Kailua at the Surfriders’ newly named Alex Kane Stadium. Senior Jordan Liilii is considered the team’s No. 1 quarterback, but he did not start against Kailua. Kobe Kato, a sophomore, got the start and both players split time. “Jordan has been hurt,” Aiea coach […]

Hurricanes, Trojans learn well

By Paul Honda on August 31, 2014

To be sure, there is an ache in Darren Hernandez’s heart. In his soul. You lose a beloved mentor, that’s part of life. But it still hurts, not losing football games, not really. He stepped onto the field at Kapolei with his mind on his football team and its game with No. 2-ranked Mililani. But in his gut, Skippa Diaz was on his mind and on his hands. Hernandez carefully wrapped each digit of each hand with tape, a la […]

No stopping Neverson

By Nick Abramo on August 30, 2014

The threat of Randy Neverson is almost as good as the player himself. Neverson had a whopper of a game in No. 8 Leilehua’s 46-27 dumping of No. 9 Waianae on Friday night at the Seariders’ Raymond Torii Field. The athletic, 6-foot, 205-pound senior likes the direct route, usually going in as straight a line as he can with dramatic effect. He can play slotback, running back, quarterback or wide receiver and he can return kicks. On Friday, he lined […]

Waianae won’t quit

By Nick Abramo on August 30, 2014

With two losses now, it is doubtful No. 9 Waianae will maintain its spot in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 when the new rankings come out Monday. The Seariders made a gallant comeback Friday night at Raymond Torii Field, but were outclassed 46-27 by No. 8 Leilehua (3-0, 3-0). Despite constant hassling by its defensive line, Waianae (1-2, 1-2 OIA Red) had no real answer for Leilehua’s clockwork offense. And the pressure the Seariders put on three Mules quarterbacks was […]
