Wanted by No. 5 Kahuku: a workable offense

By Nick Abramo on September 29, 2014

Kahuku got a lot of love from voters in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Football Top 10 this week. The Red Raiders certainly belong among the state’s top 10 teams, but where on the list is a matter of conjecture. They moved up two spots to No. 5 after a 21-14 win over then-No. 4 Leilehua. But to get anywhere higher in the poll, or, more importantly, to advance far in the playoffs or states, Kahuku is going to have to solve […]

Crusaders, Warriors move up; Na Menehune rise

By Nick Abramo on September 29, 2014

With overwhelming wins over Division II teams, Saint Louis and Kamehameha moved up two spots each in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 football poll this week. The Crusaders are No. 3 and the Warriors are No. 4. Farrington, after its 41-14 loss to Mililani, took a tumble from No. 3 to No. 6, and Leilehua dropped all the way from No. 4 to No. 8 after a 21-14 loss to Kahuku. The Red Raiders moved up two spots to No. […]

The shot heard throughout the week

By Paul Honda on September 29, 2014

A three-play sequence to end the first half of the Mililani-Farrington football game on Saturday spelled bad news for both teams. In the end, Mililani defensive back Ramsey Tacadena suffered an injured elbow moments after intercepting a pass. Farrington quarterback Montana Liana, ejected for a late hit on Tacadena, faces a one-game suspension. “(Officials) made the right call. It was a hit on a defenseless player,” said OIA chief official Jim Beavers, who saw the game video later. Liana’s frustration […]

Leilehua learned from near miss

By Nick Abramo on September 29, 2014

Every game, every practice is a learning process, and not just for players. Coaches are taking mental notes about everything they see between the lines. As the rain began to pelt Carleton E. Weimer Field on Friday night, No. 4 Leilehua football coach Nolan Tokuda watched No. 8 Kahuku run out the clock to seal a 21-14 win that put the two teams in a tie for first in the OIA Red at 5-1. It wasn’t hard to tell that […]

College commits spark ILH volleyball drama

By Nick Abramo on September 28, 2014

Kamehameha struck first. Will it be Punahou’s turn? You can find out at noon on Saturday at Kekuhaupio Gym on the Warriors’ Kapalama campus. Top-ranked Kamehameha and No. 2 Punahou meet for the second time this season in ILH girls volleyball. On Sept. 25, Tiyana Hallums had 12 kills for Kamehameha, mostly on sets by Kamalani Akeo, to lead the Warriors to a 24-26, 26-24, 25-21 comeback victory over the Buffanblu. The Warriors trailed 17-12 and were in danger of being […]

Farrington had its share of tricks

By Paul Honda on September 28, 2014

The Govs and Trojans had their share of wrinkles to start the game on Friday night. Mililani put tight end Tyler Santos in motion and used him as a blocker on the interior for one snap, looking much like Farrington’s Freedom Alualu when he lines up as a slotback before going in motion. Maybe the Trojans used Santos in Alualu’s role during practice? But the Mamiya wrinkle was craftier. On Farrington’s first play from scrimmage, he lined up in the […]

A modern Trojan army: No defense stops it

By Paul Honda on September 28, 2014

Six weeks into the regular-season slate, this much is clear: the Mililani Trojans punish those who are imperfect. Against another strong defensive unit, Mililani rolled up 580 total yards: 302 rushing yards on 38 carries, and 278 by air. Farrington is the latest example of how the state’s No. 2- ranked team can frustrate and pacify so many opponents. Saturday’s 41-14 win by the men of Troy — lifting Mililani to 6-0 in OIA Blue play (7-0 overall) and sinking […]

A golden moment: Nanakuli is clutch

By Paul Honda on September 27, 2014

It may surprise some fans, but there are people on Oahu who never really want to see a great Division-II football game. Sometimes it’s just the label that turns them off. Other times, it’s just circumstance. Out of sight, out of mind. Nanakuli and Pearl City on Friday night — instant classic. The Golden Hawks rallied from 14 points down for a 28-21 win, scoring the go-ahead touchdown with less than 3 minutes left. Still, Pearl City had a nice […]
