Soccer not slight on dangerous scorers

By Jerry Campany on January 11, 2015

Waianae’s Stanton Spencer and Mililani’s Kalahikiola Judd both have scored nine goals this year. But that is where the similarity ends for the elite scorers. Judd, who has played two more games than Spencer, has the freedom of being surrounded by the talent that Hawaii’s Soccer Capitol can afford. Spencer, a standout in football, is about all Waianae has on the attack. Spencer has scored more than half of the team’s goals. Spencer has dented the net nine times in […]

Matautia to join Hawaii

By Jerry Campany on January 11, 2015

Two time Star-Advertiser first teamer Solomon Matautia is staying home. Matautia, a safety from Campbell, switched from Oregon State to Hawaii according to his Twitter account. Here is a snippet from the Star-Advertiser’s Stephen Tsai from his story in tomorrow’s paper: The past June, Matautia made an oral commitment to play for Oregon State. Still, Hawaii, Washington and Colorado pursued Matautia. This past September, Oregon State held off UH at Aloha Stadium. Matautia attended that game, and although he was […]

Potential is the key word for ‘Iolani’s Hogland

By Nick Abramo on January 10, 2015

Potential is the first word that comes to mind after watching ‘Iolani’s Hugh Hogland play basketball for the first time. The boy is 6-foot, 8 inches and is probably still growing. And … drum-roll please … he’s only a sophomore. Confidence is the second word that comes to mind. Not because he possesses a ton of it, mind you, but, boy, if he ever does block out the naysayers, this giant (by Hawaii standards) has the potential — there’s that […]

Saturday soccer: Punahou girls still got it

By Jerry Campany on January 10, 2015

Anuenue Zoller and Kaile Halvorsen both scored as Punahou beat Kamehameha 2-1 in girls soccer on Saturday. In other ILH games, Iolani got two goals from Kristin Hori in a 5-1 win over Mid-Pacific and Breanne Ihara collected a hat trick in Pac-Five’s 8-0 win over St. Francis. Emily Lakey added two goals for the Wolfpack. The ILH boys went to form, with Punahou getting goals from eight different players in a shutout of Damien, Kamehameha getting scores from Christopher […]

Swimming records fall at Kalani

By Nick Abramo on January 10, 2015

By all accounts, the water was a lot warmer on the second day of the 38th annual Dorothy Aki Invitational Swimming Meet at Kalani High School on Saturday. Maybe the warmer temperature was a reason why records were broken eight times in the two-day event. “It was so cold (Friday),” said Kanoa Kaleoaloha, who is $200 richer for his two-day performance in the pool. “I made a bet with my brother, Kaleikoa,” he added. “He said he would give me […]

McGehee keeps Mililani brand going

By Nick Abramo on January 9, 2015

Steve McGehee was an assistant for Jeff Yamamoto at Mililani for 15 years and now he’s the Trojans boys soccer head coach. And he’s loving the coaching part. “The administration part is not something I enjoy and it’s also something I’m not very good at,” he said Friday after a 1-0 win over Campbell at Kauinana Stadium. The Trojans were flying high, especially in the first half, and it was a surprise they did not come up with more goals. […]

Furuta scores 3 to lead Trojans

By Nick Abramo on January 9, 2015

Mililani remained the unquestioned leader in OIA West girls soccer Friday night with a 3-0 thumping of Campbell at Kauinana Stadium. Tia Furuta scored three times, including twice in the second half, and the Trojans defense shut Campbell down. With the win, Mililani improved to 8-0 and left Campbell at 5-2 and in a dogfight with Aiea and Pearl City for second place in the West. “We did so much better than we did on Tuesday (a 1-0 win over […]

Kamehameha’s challenge: maintaining hunger

By Nick Abramo on January 9, 2015

For the Kamehameha girls wrestling team, there are high expectations this season after the Warriors won the state title a year ago. It helps to have junior Teshya Alo, the reigning FILA Cadet world champion, leading the way. She is also a two-time state champion. For head coach Bill Vanenciano and assistant Chris West, keeping the girls focused and ready is the top priority. The Warriors have been tested early. They placed second to Campbell at the Hawaii Wrestling Officials […]
